About the Role
This role supports and drives continuous improvement in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental, and Community (SHEC) policies, standards, procedures, and management systems for exploration activities across Canada. The specialist provides technical guidance and operational oversight to ensure effective implementation of integrated SHEC programs, partnering with leadership to proactively identify and manage risks, strengthen safety culture, and reduce incidents.
Responsibilities
- Ensure exploration activities in Canada comply with corporate health and safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in Management Assurance Reviews (MARs), internal audits, and field-based safety inspections.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System for exploration activities.
- Oversee the deployment and effectiveness of Fatal Risk Management processes and Life-Saving Controls.
- Foster and embed a strong, proactive safety culture aimed at incident-free exploration activities.
- Participate in the design, implementation, and delivery of safety leadership, emergency response, and risk management training programs.
- Review, analyze, and report monthly safety and health performance metrics.
- Reduce the probability and potential impact of incidents through effective risk identification, assessment, and control.
- Participate in the implementation of occupational health programs, including industrial hygiene, health surveillance, and preventative health initiatives.
- Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventative action plans.
- Participate in the ownership and monitoring of the Drilling Standard at Canada Exploration.
- Participate in the ownership of emergency response plans at Canada Exploration.
- Participate in the ownership and monitoring of the light vehicle standard at Canada Exploration.
- Participate in the ownership of the training and competence matrix at Canada Exploration.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Engineering, Geology, or a related field preferred.
- Master’s degree or professional safety certification (e.g., CSP, CIH, CRSP) preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in safety and health roles within mining or heavy industry preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supporting exploration or mobile field operations strongly preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, Canadian occupational health regulations required.
- Proven ability to influence leaders and contractors and drive cultural change required.
- Strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills required.
- High personal commitment to safety leadership and Barrick´s DNA values‑based performance required.
