About the Role
Google Employment Legal provides employment legal advice to People Operations teams and management globally on handling complex HR, employment, and labor law issues. As Employment Counsel, you will have the opportunity to work independently but collaboratively within a fun, fast-paced legal team. You will be responsible for providing legal advice and support to HR teams, Compensation, Benefits, and Recruiting teams based in the region and globally in relation to a broad range of employee-related issues. You can work independently but simultaneously be team focussed, keeping the team updated on new issues and high risk situations. You will prioritize the demands of multiple internal clients, both regionally and globally, and be flexible in adapting to their needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide practical and business-minded legal advice to all levels of HR and management on a variety of employment legal topics.
- Advise on employee representation and collective bargaining matters.
- Draft employment guidelines, agreements, and policies.
- Create procedures and process efficiencies.
- Advise on compensation programs, employee benefits, HR compliance projects, extended workforce issues, restructuring, and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A).
- Manage relationships with outside counsel and other providers, ensuring services are efficient and cost effective.
Requirements
- JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 years of relevant attorney level work experience, in-house experience.
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.
- Ability to communicate in Japanese and English fluently to engage with external and internal local stakeholders in Japan.
Skills
- Knowledge of relevant employment laws in Japan.
- Familiarity with employment laws across other APAC countries outside Japan.
- Ability to identify legal issues, and give sound and practical advice.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage numerous projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and ability to communicate difficult legal concepts concisely.
