About the Role

This role provides strong technical leadership to the Data Research department, driving efforts across all three research arms and promoting technical excellence. Reporting to the CTO, you will lead a team of 6, initially with one direct report, with expectations of team growth.

Responsibilities

Define ODP’s data research strategy in collaboration with the CTO, Head of Strategy, and key stakeholders.
Deliver end-to-end data research projects, defining research hypotheses and owning complex projects to unlock new KPI trackers.
Identify potential experts for consultation calls to develop sophisticated research angles.
Level up the data evaluation standard by owning the speed and quality of new data set evaluations.
Define and enforce data evaluation standards to ensure accuracy and minimize rework.
Continuously improve the evaluation process to assess novel data sources for product launches.
Own and develop the data valuation discipline, improving cost-benefit analysis for data purchasing decisions.
Lead the Data Research team and drive technical excellence by defining and enforcing technical standards.
Hire top data research talent as the function grows.
Drive higher statistical and technical sophistication within the team.
Build Data Research into a durable capability.
Collaborate with the Head of AI & DataOps and CTO to integrate AI into Data Research workflows.

Requirements

Technically excellent data leader capable of setting direction and performing deep data analysis.
Around 10 years of relevant experience in data science, statistics, or a related field.
At least three years of experience in a managerial or technical leadership role.
Strong quantitative background with hands-on experience in statistical analysis, data modelling, and working with real-world data sets.
Proficient in Python and SQL.
Ability to review and challenge the technical work of the team.
Demonstrable track record of work on feature engineering and modelling across various domains.
Experience defining research hypotheses and owning complex, open-ended research projects end-to-end.
Experience leading and growing a technical team, including hiring, setting standards, and developing individuals.
Comfortable managing managers as the function scales.
Ability to weigh cost against benefit for data purchases and communicate reasoning clearly.
Ability to explain technical findings and limitations to non-technical audiences.
Ability to work effectively across departmental boundaries.
Comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities and imperfect information.
