About the Role
Salesforce AI Labs is building a production-ready AI product that learns from human demonstrations to automate complex enterprise application workflows. This role offers the autonomy of a startup with the reach of Salesforce, allowing you to own substantial systems from design through deployment and help take a new offering from early adoption to general availability.
Responsibilities
- Build systems that learn from demonstrations and combine AI reasoning with deterministic execution to complete workflows reliably.
- Develop recovery and verification capabilities for agent adaptation to changes, outcome confirmation, and recognition of needed human intervention.
- Build backend services with robust workflow state management, failure handling, and secure access to customer environments.
- Create evaluations and diagnostics to measure task success, expose regressions, and make failures understandable.
- Work alongside customers to understand their workflows, prototype solutions, and validate results in their environments.
- Investigate automation success or failure points and translate findings into core product improvements.
- Assist customers in moving from initial successful workflows to repeatable, increasingly self-service adoption.
- Partner with forward-deployed engineers and product management to influence the product roadmap based on customer needs.
- Own technical decisions for substantial components, from initial design through production operation.
- Evaluate model selection, tool use, and context management against reliability, latency, and cost.
- Mentor peers through design discussions and code reviews, and participate in hiring.
Requirements
- Independently owned a substantial backend service or system through design, deployment, production failures, and subsequent improvements.
- Hands-on experience building and evaluating LLM-powered systems, with the ability to explain quality assessment and failure modes.
- Ability to reason through concurrency, persistent state, retries, and partial failures in systems performing consequential actions.
- Proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Ability to translate unclear customer problems into a bounded technical approach, test it with users, and carry it through to production.
- Desire for direct customer engagement, including problem investigation and technical tradeoff discussions.
- Thoughtful use of AI development tools and responsibility for the correctness, security, and maintainability of shipped work.
