About the Role
The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner functions in collaboration with an attending physician, providing diagnostic and therapeutic patient care within a multidisciplinary team. This role focuses on a patient-centric environment, addressing the holistic needs of the patient and family, and serving as a key point of contact for care continuity.
Responsibilities
- Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Provides optimal patient care, from diagnostic to prognostic matters, in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings.
- Works in collaboration with attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law and hospital regulations, hospital policy, protocols, and clinical pathways.
- Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates/manages patient treatment plans.
- May perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, and within professional competency standards.
- May function as a first or second assistant on operative cases, utilizing fine motor skills and manual dexterity.
- Educates patients/families on care and recommended resources, including admitting instructions, treatment plans, medication side effects, and discharge plans.
- Provides psychosocial support to patients, their family members, and significant others.
- Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
- Protects information of all forms from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
- Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
- Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
- Continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency.
- Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and may provide service-specific orientation.
- Consistently demonstrates high reliability organizational behaviors through reporting safety events and near misses.
- Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy.
- May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals.
- May serve as a mentor to pre-PA/NP candidates.
- May collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects.
- May assist with the formation of protocols for clinical practice or to further educational and clinical expertise.
Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs are required to be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS Hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
- Evidence of current competence to practice as an APRN, PA, CRNA, or CNM via appropriate reference letters must be obtainable during the Medical Staff appointment process.
