About the Role
The Maintenance Hand at Reddam House is responsible for ensuring the school's buildings, grounds, and equipment are maintained to a high standard, creating a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing environment. The role supports the school's mission by providing general operational support and overseeing facility upkeep, performing handyman tasks and function setups to ensure the campus is functional and inviting.
Responsibilities
- Manage vehicle and pedestrian flow during school drop-off and pick-up times.
- Ensure safe crossing for students and families.
- Coordinate with school staff to maintain orderly traffic movement on campus.
- Assist with the setup of school functions such as assemblies, presentations, and exams.
- Support basic event technology setup (e.g., microphones, projectors, screens, laptops).
- Perform pre-event checks to ensure equipment is functional and ready.
- Conduct daily walkthroughs to identify and resolve potential issues affecting school operations.
- Ensure all facilities are ready for use at the start of each day.
- Maintain the school grounds to a high standard, including accurate sports line marking and upkeep of groundskeeping machinery.
- Perform general building repairs and maintenance, promptly addressing safety and hygiene issues and supporting inspections.
- Oversee the upkeep, storage, delivery, and relocation of school equipment and furniture as needed.
- Monitor and report safety risks while assisting with access control and building security checks.
- Keep detailed maintenance records.
- Collaborate effectively with staff.
- Support school events with timely setups.
Requirements
- Previous experience in a maintenance, handyman, or groundskeeping role, preferably within an educational setting.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations, especially in relation to facilities management.
- Experience using a range of machinery and tools for gardening, building maintenance, and repairs.
- Familiarity with facilities management software and record-keeping practices.
- Good communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with contractors and school personnel.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities efficiently.
- Traffic control qualification and experience or willingness to obtain one.
- Previous experience with AV systems highly desirable.
- Highly organised with a strong attention to detail.
- Proactive and able to identify and solve problems efficiently.
- Adaptable and flexible, with a positive attitude towards taking on new responsibilities as they arise.
- Friendly and approachable, fostering good working relationships with staff and students.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment.
- Supportive and adaptable within a close-knit maintenance team.
- Willingness to work occasional after-hours shifts when necessary for emergencies or special events.
- Ability to lift heavy items, move furniture, and perform physically demanding tasks as required.
