About the Role

KPMG is seeking a Tax Associate to join its State & Local Tax practice. This role offers the opportunity to become an integral part of a dynamic team at a leading tax firm, working in a collaborative, future-forward culture that empowers success. You will collaborate with KPMG's extensive network of specialists and utilize Ignition Centers where industry knowledge merges with cutting-edge technologies to create innovative tax solutions. Responsibilities

  • Assist multi-state companies with state and local tax issues (income/franchise, sales/use, excise and property tax) including compliance, consulting, planning and controversies.
  • Assist clients with business tax planning transactions and mergers and acquisitions, identifying and developing state and local tax issues and savings opportunities from legal entity changes/transactions, and designing specific plans to address state and local tax matters.
  • Research and draft state and local tax technical memoranda.
  • Assist with M&A transactions involving acquisitions and dispositions of equity interests and/or business assets.
  • Supervise the work of shared services team members and interns; assist in handling notices including coordination of shared resources.
  • Analyze, prepare and review tax workpapers and returns, estimated payments and extensions; stay current on state and local tax legislative, judicial and administrative developments.
  • Build capabilities in key technologies that enable tax professionals for client service delivery such as artificial intelligence (AI), Alteryx, Power BI and more.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop and sustain excellent client relationships.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing and have obtained by the start date or have completed a Bachelors and/or Masters in accounting, finance, taxation, mathematics, economics, information technology, data and analytics, engineering (financial, industrial or systems), or equivalent program from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be pursuing the state-specific education requirements to be a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the principal place of business for this position, with completion of required academic credits prior to the start date.
  • Strong tax research skills.
  • Strong technical, business acumen, critical thinking and agility skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel and drive strategic outcomes, coupled with a professional demeanor and a collaborative leadership approach, in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated quality service mindset, strong technical aptitude, ability to learn and navigate technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Alteryx and Power BI, MS Office Applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook and apply emerging technologies to enhance tax processes and insights.
  • Excellent communication, time management and leadership skills, feedback oriented, and resourceful in delivering high quality work.
  • Must reside within a reasonably commutable distance to the office for this position and be able to travel to reasonably commutable work locations using own means of transportation.
  • Ability to travel and/or work on-site at client premises as needed, at times with relatively short notice.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Consideration will be given to qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records in accordance with California Fair Chance Act and relevant ordinances.
