About the Role
Airtree is seeking an Investment Manager to identify and secure early-stage companies founded by ANZ entrepreneurs. This mid-level role requires someone with commercial acumen and a passion for building relationships, who can lead deals end-to-end, contribute to internal AI tooling, and refine evaluation frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Source and win early stage investments.
- Build a sourcing engine for early stage companies across ANZ and selectively globally.
- Develop relationships within the AI community, including researchers, builders, operators, and open-source contributors.
- Act as a primary contact for founders in the AI space.
- Engage with the AI community through events and discourse to build trust.
- Conduct Investment Committee-quality diligence.
- Evaluate technical defensibility, data moats, and the competitive landscape.
- Assess founding teams based on technical credibility, commercial instinct, and recruitment ability.
- Write investment memos that are rigorous on technology, honest about risks, and clear on timing.
- Contribute to the development and use of Airtree's internal AI-powered tools for sourcing, research, meeting preparation, and portfolio monitoring.
- Support portfolio founders by acting as a sounding board for AI adoption, integration, and strategy.
- Connect founders with relevant contacts in your network, including talent, customers, co-investors, and technical advisors.
Requirements
- Proven interest in investing and the startup ecosystem.
- High agency; proactive and self-directed.
- Ability to write a compelling investment memo with clear thinking, honest risk assessment, and a strong point of view.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Genuine care for founders and a desire to be useful to them.
- Experience building or shipping products, tools, or prototypes using AI.
- Understanding of AI models from first-hand experience.
- Keen interest in AI research, tracking developments from major labs, and distinguishing signal from noise.
- Ability to differentiate between novel architectures and fine-tuned wrappers.
- Deeply networked in AI or possess the instinct and energy to become so quickly.
- Ability to build trust with diverse individuals, from researchers to commercial co-founders.
- Comfortable in technical and commercial discussions.
- Prior venture capital or startup operating experience (nice to have).
- Technical background (e.g., computer science, engineering, maths) or equivalent (nice to have).
- Experience evaluating deep-tech or frontier-technology companies (nice to have).
- Existing network in the ANZ or global AI community (nice to have).
- A public body of work (writing, open-source contributions, talks, products) (nice to have).
