About the Role

Benchling is building AI & Data Engineering, a team focused on internal AI capabilities and adoption, as well as the source-of-truth data and analytics infrastructure. This role involves bridging departmental AI experimentation with enterprise-grade agentic systems, prototyping solutions, and hardening them into production-ready systems. The founding engineer will own the technical direction, architecture, and delivery of internal tooling and automation, acting as a player-coach and partnering with product management and data analytics peers. This is an individual contributor role focused on enabling other teams and driving technical hiring.

Responsibilities

Define the foundational architecture for internal tooling and automation, including integration patterns, workflow orchestration, data access, service boundaries, and observability.
Own the architecture for agentic workflows, including tool integration, state management, and evaluation.
Make clear build vs. buy decisions with documented rationale.
Write production code at least half the time, especially in the first year.
Establish CI/CD, testing, and deployment infrastructure.
Graduate departmental prototypes into hardened, production-grade systems.
Own production support under a "you build it, you run it" model.
Build for multi-tenant isolation, secrets management, audit logging, payload encryption, role-based access controls, and human-in-the-loop controls.
Partner with Security Engineering on threat modeling.
Coach power users and departmental teams on production patterns.
Develop criteria for graduating prototypes into enterprise-grade systems.
Build internal-facing developer experience, including templates, SDKs, and sandboxes.
Partner with data analytics peers on source-of-truth datasets and pipelines.
Collaborate with department leaders and non-technical stakeholders to define and scope engineering problems.
Drive engineering initiatives to shipped systems based on independent judgment.
Leverage existing platform and infrastructure capabilities.
Set standards for code quality, testing, evaluation, documentation, and on-call practices.
Drive technical hiring through interview loop design and candidate assessment.
Mentor engineers on the team and other AI builders across the company.

Requirements

7+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems.
Strong systems design and integration fundamentals.
Track record of building internal tools, automation, and systems integrations.
Experience wiring together APIs, SaaS platforms, and internal services.
Owned production systems and their results.
Demonstrated understanding of optimizing workloads across deterministic and non-deterministic capabilities.
Production experience with at least two of: Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go.
Comfort working across the full stack.
Practical experience applying LLMs where they are beneficial and recognizing where they are not.
Track record of building a platform, function, or product area from scratch and scaling it.
Experience operating in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
Solid grasp of enterprise security fundamentals (encryption, access controls, audit logging, secrets management).
Comfort exercising technical leadership independent of positional authority.
Ability to set direction, raise the bar in design reviews, and grow other engineers through influence.
Build software with a product-first approach, shipping code quickly and focusing on real-world impact.
Enjoy ownership and building key pieces of platforms.
Strong communication skills with non-technical audiences.
Ability to understand, challenge, and propose engineering solutions for non-technical workflows.
Interest in learning more about life science (prior knowledge not required).
