About the Role
The Machine Learning Infrastructure Team at Thumbtack is responsible for centralizing, standardizing, and evolving AI/ML infrastructure to power various AI-driven experiences. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be a senior technical leader setting the technical direction for both the AI/ML platform and the AI evaluation platform, designing, building, and shipping significant systems while mentoring other engineers.
Responsibilities
- Build and evolve core AI platform capabilities for developing, running, and scaling GenAI applications.
- Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of scalable tools and infrastructure for applied scientists.
- Work hands-on across the stack, including backend services, execution infrastructure, and AI model integrations.
- Partner with senior engineers to evaluate next-generation AI infrastructure frameworks and tools.
- Drive projects to completion with a strong focus on business impact and measurable outcomes.
- Solve complex technical problems and stay current with advancements in the AI field.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of technical leadership at staff level or equivalent scope.
- 3+ years building AI/ML infrastructure in production (model serving, feature platforms, training or orchestration systems, or ML observability).
- Hands-on experience with LLM-powered systems in production (LLM gateways/proxies, prompt/model lifecycle management, RAG/agentic architectures, cost optimization).
- Experience building or operating AI evaluation systems (offline eval pipelines, LLM-as-judge, regression testing, A/B measurement).
- Deep experience designing, building, and operating reliable distributed systems, including production service ownership, on-call, and incident leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI coding tools and validate/refine AI-generated output.
