About the Role
This role owns the harness layer for Rippling's agents, which includes the memory systems and self-improvement loops. You will make build-vs-buy decisions on runtime architecture, define project completion criteria for memory systems, and collaborate with staff engineers on design reviews.
Responsibilities
- Inform the architecture that turns a model into a worker, including planning, tool calls, result interpretation, and decision-making.
- Define the contract between orchestration and the harness, including guardrails and refinement strategies.
- Manage working memory within a single run and episodic memory across sessions.
- Define the boundary between context and tool calls, and determine what data gets persisted, compacted, or forgotten.
- Own the feedback loop for harness improvement without manual prompt editing, including eval-driven tuning and benchmarking.
- Define "improved" metrics such as task completion rate, escalation rate, cost, and latency.
- Oversee sandboxing and execution environments, permission tiers, credential handling, and the observability stack.
- Extend the harness into computer-use and autonomous web/research capabilities.
Requirements
- Former software engineer with 5+ years of combined experience.
- Proven track record of shipping production systems.
- Experience building or shipping agentic systems in production.
- Precise understanding of agent frameworks versus harnesses.
- Proficiency in thinking about state machines and failure modes.
- Experience debugging distributed systems.
- Strong point of view on evals and ability to design predictive benchmarks.
- Default to writing design docs when necessary.
- Comfortable receiving design feedback from engineers.
