About the Role
Ads at Whatnot serve as a dual growth lever for sellers and a revenue driver for the company. The team is responsible for the entire ads system, including backend foundations, retrieval and ranking, UI and dashboards, logging, and measurement. Engineers on this team are expected to independently own and lead significant functionalities, collaborating across various engineering departments.
Responsibilities
- Own and lead major pieces of functionality independently.
- Work closely with the rest of the engineering organization, including Discovery, Seller Growth, Data Platform, Machine Learning Platform, and Payments.
- Build end-to-end high-scale product experiences.
- Own problems end to end and grow into new areas as the team scales.
- Mentor others and prioritize building inclusive, supportive teams.
- Ship products and features rapidly.
- Operate autonomously and solve problems effectively.
- Pick up new technologies quickly.
- Deliver features.
- Use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller as part of the job.
Requirements
- 5+ years of generalist software development experience.
- Full-stack proficiency, comfortable working across mobile (iOS/Android), web, and backend systems.
- Web development experience with React.
- Experience using GraphQL for API development.
- Experience with modern frontend applications.
- Proven track record of building end-to-end high-scale product experiences as a full-stack engineer.
- Excellent product instincts, prioritizing users over technical solutions.
- Strong ownership instincts, capable of owning projects from inception to production and beyond.
- Ability to pick up on new technologies very quickly.
- Proven track record of delivering features.
