About the Role

WoodGreen’s Financial Empowerment (FE) Program aims to prevent, reduce, and alleviate poverty by addressing financial barriers for clients. The FE Social Worker provides financial counselling, education, and tax filing support, and oversees volunteers and students for the Income Tax Clinic and Financial Literacy Workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and family financial empowerment counselling for assigned clients.
  • Stay current on financial regulations and resources for low-income individuals in Toronto.
  • Utilize a client-centered and trauma-informed approach to address financial concerns.
  • Develop and implement service plans with clients based on their goals.
  • Conduct financial benefits eligibility assessments with clients.
  • Assist clients in applying for government benefits and income supports.
  • Problem-solve and advocate for clients denied government benefits and income supports.
  • Prepare income tax returns and T1 adjustments.
  • Maintain knowledge of WoodGreen and external agency services.
  • Refer clients to appropriate internal and external resources.
  • Maintain accurate client records and case notes.
  • Participate in Tax Clinic development and service planning meetings.
  • Assist in creating Tax Clinic volunteer training materials and delivering training.
  • Oversee the volunteer Tax Clinic operations, support volunteers, and provide direct client tax services.
  • Develop, update, and deliver Financial Literacy workshops.
  • Provide financial topic information to WoodGreen and external professionals.
  • Assist in training, overseeing, and supporting volunteers and students.
  • Participate in strategic program planning and development.
  • Collect statistical data for program accountability.
  • Attend team and unit meetings regularly.
  • Represent the unit on internal staff committees as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree in Social Work (BSW or MSW).
  • Registered Social Worker (RSW) in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
  • Minimum of 2 years of case management experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working or volunteering in a community-based setting or the not-for-profit sector.
  • Currently a Registered Social Worker (RSW), or willing and eligible to become registered upon hire.
  • Experience providing income support case work and/or financial problem-solving to clients.

  • Canadian income tax system knowledge.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Experience developing and facilitating educational workshops.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Experience working with and mentoring volunteers and students.
  • Comfortable providing services using mobile technology.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
