About the Role

St. Michael's Prep seeks an experienced Director of College and Academic Counseling to lead the college and academic advising program. This role supports students throughout the college admission and academic counseling process using a cohort-looping model, guiding them from 8th grade through graduation. The Director will collaborate with school leadership to develop a forward-thinking approach to academic and college advising.

Responsibilities

  • Educate students and parents on colleges, the admission process, trends, procedures, and testing.
  • Advise and support approximately 100 seniors and their families through the college application process.
  • Meet with 9th–12th grade students individually and in groups to discuss college admissions and timelines.
  • Facilitate college admission representative visits and liaise with college admissions offices.
  • Write letters of recommendation and advise over one quarter of the senior class.
  • Prepare and present informational sessions for parents, including college information nights.
  • Stay current on college admission and higher education trends, maintaining professional memberships and attending conferences.
  • Coordinate PSAT and AP exams on campus.
  • Maintain a list of scholarships and summer programs.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders through newsletters and social media.
  • Review incoming 9th-grade students' portfolios and participate in Middle School articulation meetings.
  • Meet with new 9th-grade students and families to initiate the counseling relationship and academic planning.
  • Guide 9th-grade students in curriculum exposure, study skills, course selection, and Winter Term choices.
  • Serve as the primary academic contact for assigned 9th-grade students and families, coordinating with Advisors.
  • Support 10th-grade students with curricular and extracurricular choices and conduct regular check-ins.
  • Lead a structured academic discernment process for 10th graders, including student reflections, mentor meetings, and family conferences.
  • Document 10th-grade students' emerging directions and align them with junior-year course registration.
  • Guide students toward experiential and Winter Term programs to clarify interests.
  • Serve as the primary academic and college counseling contact from 9th grade through graduation.
  • Meet regularly with each student's Advisor to coordinate concerns and family communication.
  • Guide AP course planning aligned with student interests and college goals.
  • Help students choose 11th- and 12th-grade Winter Term experiences to deepen pathway commitment and strengthen applications.
  • Serve as academic counselor for approximately one quarter of the 9th–12th grade student body.
  • Oversee an Advisory group of approximately 10 students.
  • Assist with course registration and ongoing course advising for assigned students.
  • Maintain shared student documentation across the counseling team to ensure continuity.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree.
  • 3–5 years of college counseling and/or college admission experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational ability.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Flexible self-starter.
  • Warm and friendly demeanor.
  • Effective communication skills for an engaged student and parent population.
  • Genuine interest in student development.
  • Enthusiasm for guiding students through the high school to college transition.
  • Familiarity with or enthusiasm for learning school-wide advisory and pathway models.
  • Experience working within a structured 9–12 advising framework is a plus.
