About the Role
Engagement Counselors welcome clients to the main drop-in center, assisting them with accessing essential services like food, laundry, and case management. This role involves monitoring client well-being, offering resources, and organizing activities to foster life skills, community, and engagement in education, employment, and creative development.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the care and welfare of clients, including crisis intervention and maintaining program safety.
- Provide support to the Engagement & Community Center, including the front desk and food services.
- Engage with a diverse client population facing challenges such as substance use, mental health symptoms, and trauma.
- Handle crisis situations using de-escalation techniques and assist clients in processing social and emotional problems.
- Facilitate and engage youth in groups and workshops.
- Model life skills through active counseling, motivational interviewing, and group facilitation.
- Promote community wellness using a harm reduction approach.
- Ensure the safety and security of clients, staff, volunteers, and the facility.
- Collect and organize client information through intake, assessment, and surveys, entering data into various systems.
- Coordinate with other professionals to assist clients in navigating Larkin Street and city services.
- Teach or hold group meetings related to Larkin Street Core Curriculum and approved educational materials.
- Maintain facility cleanliness and operations, including meal preparation, storage areas, and activity schedules.
- Support program services within the milieu, such as crisis intervention.
- Contribute to the care and welfare of staff and clients.
- Participate in professional development activities to enhance skill levels.
- Oversee shower, laundry, and clothing closet services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Passionate about the Larkin Street Youth Services mission to end youth homelessness.
- Embody values including Client-Centered, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Trauma Informed Care, Restorative Practices, Harm Reduction, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Motivational Interviewing.
- Possess social services and/or direct-service experience.
- Experience working in drop-in services, shelter, transitional, and/or permanent supportive housing programs is a plus.
- Excited to serve Transitional Aged Youth (TAY), aged 18 to 25 of diverse backgrounds.
- Self-starter and team player, described as compassionate, dependable, and patient.
- Willing to work holidays occasionally.
