About the Role
The Special Education Teacher Assistant at Children’s Academy reports directly to the Director of Education and/or the Head of School’s designee. This role involves overseeing and delivering education for students within the classroom setting, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team, and ensuring the classroom environment and instruction meet the school's mission standards. The assistant must accept all children and interact with dignity and respect.
Responsibilities
- Planning and implementing innovative and culturally relevant project-based learning experiences for students to foster engagement with curriculum and activities centered on building language acquisition, inquiry, and critical thinking skills.
- Planning daily and weekly activities for a balance of academic and social learning, utilizing all provided resources and opportunities.
- Participating in IEP Meetings, Impartial Hearings, and Parent Teacher Conferences.
- Collaborating with Speech-Language and Occupational Therapists to integrate appropriate supports and practices into students’ school days.
- Providing differentiated instruction to students.
- Communicating proactively and positively with team members and administration.
- Building student relationships and a sense of community.
- Supervising students during on- and off-site field trips.
- Being aware of and following students’ individual plans, including sensory diets and individual behavior plans.
- Adhering to all school-wide policies.
- Assisting with scheduling staff vacancies.
- Assisting with bussing.
- Supporting students in growing social skills, such as problem-solving, approaching complex tasks, collaborating with peers, and resolving friendship struggles.
- Building community and family partnerships through smooth transitions and aligned classroom activities.
- Inspiring students’ curiosity, building background knowledge, and increasing students’ confidence.
- Developing positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Approaching enrichment experiences with a culturally responsive lens.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required (education, psychology, social work, or related field preferred).
- Prior experience working with students with special needs required.
- Comfort and confidence supporting students with behavioral challenges.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Patience, professionalism, and commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
