About the Role
We are hiring our first Data Engineer to build Perry Weather's data platform from the ground up. You will design, build, and operate the architecture, and will be accountable for its adoption and use by the company. This role is crucial for unifying operational and business systems, creating a data lakehouse and analytics platform to serve executive decision-making, internal AI workflows, and new customer-facing data products. As the first hire on the data team, you will set the architecture and standards for future hires, with an open mandate to define the direction.
Responsibilities
- Own the data platform end to end, including architecture, ingestion, modeling, orchestration, testing, cost, and reliability.
- Make and stand behind build-vs-buy decisions for the data platform.
- Unify operational and business systems, including Azure SQL Server, TimescaleDB, HubSpot, Zendesk, Acumatica, and sensor telemetry into a single, modeled, documented, and queryable layer.
- Own data reliability through data contracts, freshness and quality SLAs, lineage, observability, and an on-call rotation.
- Build the infrastructure to turn collected data (weather observations, sensor telemetry, environmental conditions, alerts, operational events) into customer-facing analytics, APIs, benchmarking, and historical datasets.
- Build the pipelines and centralized datasets for internal AI agents and LLM workflows, partnering with department leaders to automate repetitive work.
- Set the standard for the data team by defining data modeling, change review processes, and decision documentation.
- Assist in hiring future data engineers.
- Work directly with business stakeholders (Finance, Revenue, CX, Product, Executive team) to understand their decisions and design data solutions accordingly.
Requirements
- 7+ years in data engineering, or backend engineering with deep data ownership.
- Experience designing, building from scratch, and operating at least one cloud-native data platform in production.
- Enterprise-scale data lake, lakehouse, or warehouse experience with ownership of schema, storage, and partitioning decisions.
- Expert SQL and dimensional modeling skills.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, CI/CD, code review, and infrastructure as code.
- Reliable ETL/ELT experience across operational databases, SaaS APIs, and telemetry streams.
- Track record supporting executive reporting where numbers had significant consequences.
- Hands-on depth in a modern cloud data stack (Synapse, Databricks, or Snowflake experience accepted).
- Fluency with AI-native engineering tools and agentic workflows for multiplying technical output and speeding up development cycles.
