About the Role
As a Senior Data Engineer on the Data Platform team, you will own the systems responsible for capturing usage events, transforming them into trustworthy models in Snowflake, and enabling other teams to access data efficiently. This is a hands-on role with high ownership, where your judgment in prioritizing projects is as crucial as your technical contributions. You will define the technical direction for data ingestion and modeling, serving as the go-to expert for other engineering teams needing data instrumentation.
Responsibilities
- Own the event ingestion architecture end to end, including Azure Event Hub, Snowpipe, Fivetran, and shared Python/TypeScript event client libraries.
- Build and operate dbt transformation pipelines, ensuring reliability as volume, source count, and model complexity increase.
- Define and enforce event contracts and schemas to prevent downstream breakage.
- Build reverse ETL and activation paths to push modeled data into business tools like HubSpot, MongoDB, Postgres, and GTM reporting.
- Evolve core data models (event, user, license, company) that underpin all other data assets.
- Manage Snowflake performance and cost, and address tech debt, dependencies, and compliance obligations.
- Integrate and model new data sources from product backends, MongoDB, HubSpot, billing, and third-party tools.
- Build guardrails and tooling to empower product teams to create events, models, and dashboards independently.
- Contribute to the semantic/context layer for consistent metric definitions across BI tools, dashboards, and AI consumers.
- Support customer-facing analytics surfaces with necessary aggregation and modeling.
- Improve documentation and definitions for self-service by analysts, stakeholders, and AI agents.
- Partner with Product, Engineering, CS, and GTM to scope data requests and provide feedback on feasibility.
Requirements
- 7+ years in data engineering or a closely related backend/platform role, with a track record of owning a data platform area end to end.
- Deep SQL and strong Python skills, including query optimization and performance tuning on a cloud warehouse.
- Production experience with a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake) and a modern transformation framework (dbt).
- Experience with event-driven/streaming ingestion and its associated failure modes.
- Experience with cloud platform infrastructure (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
- Solid data modeling fundamentals and the ability to defend modeling decisions.
- Excellent communication in English and comfort working directly with non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in a startup or scale-up environment, particularly as an early member of a data team.
- Bias to action, sense of ownership, and independent prioritization skills.
- Experience with product analytics tooling (Mixpanel, RudderStack) and warehouse-native BI.
- Experience building data products for AI or agent consumption.
- Experience with Terraform, Docker, and governance at scale.
- Reverse ETL experience and familiarity with CRM data models (HubSpot, Salesforce) or customer success platforms.
- Exposure to B2B SaaS usage-based pricing and entitlement data, or to audit/fintech.
