About the Role

The Neuro Interventional Radiology (Neuro IR) Technologist provides technical and clinical support during diagnostic and therapeutic neurovascular procedures. This role involves operating advanced imaging equipment, assisting physicians, ensuring patient safety, maintaining sterile technique, and collaborating with the healthcare team to deliver high-quality patient care. Expertise in vascular imaging, radiation safety, sterile procedural practices, and managing patients undergoing complex neurovascular interventions is required.

Responsibilities

Prepare and maintain Neuro IR suites for diagnostic and interventional procedures.
Assist physicians during neurovascular procedures including mechanical thrombectomy, cerebral angiography, aneurysm coiling, flow diversion procedures, carotid artery stenting, embolization procedures, and intracranial stenting.
Scrub and prep desired area of interest, circulate, and monitor cases as assigned.
Anticipate physician needs during procedures and maintain efficient workflow.
Perform patient positioning and imaging acquisition in accordance with departmental protocols.
Ensure proper handling and preparation of catheters, guidewires, stents, coils, thrombectomy devices, and other procedural equipment.
Produce medical images to meet established department standards.
Verify imaging of the area of interest according to standard department protocols.
Operate various computer systems and ensure images are in PACS with correct patient and examination identification information.
Operate contrast injectors.
Select and modify technical factors based on patient's age, weight, and physical condition to produce optimal images while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
Operate fixed and mobile radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment.
Produce hard-copy images and/or digitally archived images for use in patient care.
Assess the patient in relation to the requested procedure by collecting pertinent data.
Use independent judgment and radiographic skills to position patients to obtain quality exams.
Assist in the billing process by providing/entering information about supplies used into the computer system.
Provide inventory control for vascular and interventional specific supplies.
Prep and drape the patient prior to any angiographic and interventional radiology procedures.
Document information about patient care and radiologic services provided.
Prepare patient both physically and emotionally prior to examination, explaining procedures to allay patient fears.
Educate the patient, family, and other health care providers as appropriate regarding the requested procedure.
Analyze collected data and use professional judgment to select the most appropriate and cost-effective method for completing the requested procedure.
Alter positioning of patient and/or equipment as required by patient condition to obtain required images.
Communicate with patients of all ages to explain procedures and obtain cooperation.
Respond appropriately in highly stressful emergency situations when a patient's life is in jeopardy.
Determine the need for repeat or additional images, and the technical factor or patient positioning adjustments required to correct image/examination deficiencies.
Perform all other duties as required.

Requirements

Minimum formal education of Associate Degree or certification equivalent.
Minimum of 3 years job-related experience.
Minimum three years of previous experience as a Vascular Interventional Technologist.
Certification and current registration in Vascular-interventional Technology (VI) by ARRT (Desired).
License, NY State Radiologic Technologist License & ARRT Certification.
Knowledge of Interventional Radiology supplies and techniques.
Ability to operate the supply cabinets without complications.
Must be able to operate a computer keyboard and mouse to enter information into various computer systems.
Experience to recognize when altering exam protocols is necessary to achieve desired imaging results.
Ability to understand and adhere to exam protocols and guidelines.
Skill in operating digital imaging and subtraction equipment.
Skill in applying the principles of radiation protection and safety.
Knowledge of the principles of digital imaging and digital subtraction techniques.
Knowledge of radiographic image production and processing.
Knowledge of radiologic contrast media and medications routinely used in radiology.
Knowledge of radiation physics, radiobiology, and radiation protection.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
Ability to accurately apply knowledge of radiologic positioning and exposure technique.
Differentiates between artifacts and normal pathological processes.
