About the Role
The Empire State Service Corps Mental Health Peer Advocate & Substance Abuse Support fosters a supportive, inclusive, and stigma-free environment for students. This leadership role involves collaboration with the campus community to promote mental health awareness and substance abuse support, connecting students with appropriate resources through various channels.
Responsibilities
- Create a supportive environment in Health and Wellness Services and the Best Life Lounge or Recovery Space.
- Provide resource guidance and referrals regarding the College's mental health or recovery resources.
- Collaborate with HWS staff to develop and deliver mental health awareness or recovery workshops, presentations, and social media campaigns.
- Meet with students individually to discuss their mental health or substance use challenges, offering peer support and guidance.
- Facilitate small group sessions to encourage open dialogue about mental health or substance use topics.
- Recognize signs of mental health discomfort and crises and provide peer support and referrals.
- Gather information from students on mental health or substance use concerns and initiatives for HWS departmental improvement.
Requirements
- Must complete Healthy Future Cohort training through SUNY.
- Must complete on-the-job training.
- Must be empathetic, approachable, and passionate about advocating for mental health and wellness.
- Must respect confidentiality, boundaries, and scope.
- Must report to the Health and Wellness Case Manager and the Wellness.
