About the Role
The work involves installation, maintenance, and repair of locks, keys, and other door or gate hardware. Incumbents use a variety of tools to repair and install locks, set cylinders, change lock combinations, and open jammed locks. Employees estimate materials needed and establish and maintain lock and key record systems. Supervision of subordinates may be required.
Responsibilities
- Repairs jammed or inoperative locks.
- Removes locking mechanisms from doors, gates, and cabinets.
- Opens locks and removes defective parts or debris.
- Manufactures springs, tumblers, or levers to fit specific locks.
- Installs new parts into lock mechanisms.
- Adjusts tumblers and levers.
- Manufactures keys to fit repaired locks.
- Installs and maintains lock and key systems.
- Sets lock cylinders and changes lock combinations.
- Computes changes in lock combinations and key changes to avoid duplication.
- Maintains locks by disassembling, cleaning, oiling, and replacing parts.
- Troubleshoots and repairs electronic locking systems and components.
- Reads, interprets, and works from blueprints, CAD drawings, diagrams, and specifications.
- Determines materials and equipment needed for new construction and renovations.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and parts.
- Establishes and maintains an extensive record system for key and lock security.
- Uses a computer for reports, communication, record maintenance, and programming/troubleshooting electronic access systems.
- Performs work from ladders, platforms, and lifts in various weather conditions.
- May be required to operate a motor vehicle.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated, when required to operate a motor vehicle.
- Three (3) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as a locksmith.

- Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the locksmith trade.
- Mathematics for key changes, lock combination changes, and master key settings.
- Facility security procedures concerning key and lock issuance.
- All types of locks, locking systems, and electronic locking systems.
- Installation and repair of locksmith equipment.
- All types of electronic access systems, card access control panels, card readers, and associated electronic components.
- Planning and layout of locksmith work.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, CAD drawings, diagrams, and specifications.
- Troubleshooting and repairing electronic locking systems and components.
- Using tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the locksmith trade.
- Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions.
- Performing work requiring precision and attention to detail.
- Creating and maintaining accurate records.
- Using a computer.
- Estimating labor and material requirements.
- Supervising and training others in the locksmith trade.
- Learning and adapting to new technologies in the locksmith trade.
- Working from ladders, platforms, and lifts in all weather conditions.
Experience Level
