About the Role
As part of QRT’s Infrastructure group, you’ll help build and operate the systems behind our research, trading and business activities. The work spans hardware, operating systems, compute, storage, networking and platform engineering, with a common focus on performance, reliability and automation. Internships are designed to give students meaningful experience, contributing to real projects and learning from experienced engineers, researchers, and traders.
Responsibilities
- Help build and operate systems supporting research, trading, and business activities.
- Contribute to real projects within a team.
- Learn from engineers, researchers, and traders working on live problems.
- Measure and optimize hardware performance.
- Investigate Linux internals and tune systems.
- Develop a detailed understanding of hardware and software interaction.
- Build and operate high-performance compute, networking, and storage systems for research.
- Support large-scale data processing, advanced analytics, and machine learning/AI workloads.
- Design infrastructure to meet research workload demands efficiently.
- Build and operate high-performance storage infrastructure for research and computing workloads.
- Move and serve large volumes of data reliably, securely, and quickly.
- Work with enterprise-scale storage technologies.
- Ensure the availability, reliability, and security of QRT’s global network.
- Investigate network incidents and develop observability tooling.
- Build automation to improve network operations reliability and efficiency.
- Build and automate the infrastructure, tools, and workflows for QRT’s research and trading platforms.
- Work across cloud and on-premise environments.
- Improve deployment workflows, automate infrastructure, and enhance system reliability and repeatability.
- Build reliable, high-performance systems.
- Develop tooling and automation for deployment, monitoring, operations, and incident response.
- Investigate technical problems and improve observability.
- Design resilient systems that scale.
Requirements
- Penultimate or final-year students pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a STEM discipline.
- On track for a 2:1 degree or above.
- Interest in technology demonstrated through hobbies, personal projects, academic work, or open-source contributions.
- Curiosity about how systems work and attention to detail.
- Methodical problem-solving approach.
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and able to take ownership of technical problems.

- Shortlisted candidates will participate in interviews.
Skills
- Programming or scripting in languages such as Python or Bash.
- Tools such as Git, SQL and GCC.
- Confidence working from the Linux command line.
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix system administration fundamentals.
- Understanding of storage concepts such as RAID, erasure coding, file systems and networking protocols.
- Knowledge of networking concepts including TCP/IP and Ethernet.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus and PromQL.
- Hands-on experimentation with Linux (e.g., building Linux systems on laptops or Raspberry Pis, working with custom Android installations).
