About the Role
Reporter ohne Grenzen (RSF) is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to press freedom worldwide and organizing solidarity for persecuted journalists. The German section has been active from Berlin for over 30 years. RSF documents violations of press and information freedom globally and alerts the public when journalists and their staff are in danger. The organization advocates for reliable information in digital public spheres and for greater safety and better protection for media professionals. RSF combats censorship, the use and export of surveillance technology, and restrictive media laws, both online and offline.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate complex socio-political issues from a legal perspective and develop clear political positions for the organization, even under time pressure in a constantly changing public sphere.
- Create RSF-specific positions and statements for advocacy work, interviews, press releases, campaigns, and briefings for the board and management.
- Proactively identify medium and long-term topics at the intersection of law and politics in German and international media and human rights policy.
- Maintain and activate existing (legal) networks and build strategic contacts within the journalism, political, and human rights scenes in Germany and worldwide.
- Represent Reporter Without Borders in expert debates, legal policy hearings, and media interviews, and respond to topic-specific inquiries.
- Collaborate with and advise the departments for emergency aid and communication, as well as the political and strategic management, on current legal and political developments.
- Work closely with the International Secretariat in Paris to align national legal issues with global strategy.
- Represent the organization's concerns directly on-site, including abroad (primarily in Europe).
Requirements
- At least five years of relevant professional experience at the intersection of law and politics, ideally with a legal background (not a requirement).
- Knowledge in areas such as media, platform, and competition law, security and intelligence law, and a robust legal network.
- At least five years of experience in political networking and direct collaboration with ministries, the German Bundestag, and political decision-makers.
- Routinely analyze legislative and regulatory proposals from a legal perspective and independently develop strategic position papers.
- Prior knowledge and an existing network in at least one of the following subject areas: International media policy & journalism, European law and media policy, Platform regulation and artificial intelligence, Public discourse.
