About the Role

The Water Plant Operator ensures water distributed throughout the potable water system meets pertinent standards for safe drinking water at all times through the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical systems within the Water Plant, as well as the repair and maintenance of all auxiliary water systems.

Responsibilities

Oversee the operation, maintenance and repair of the Water Treatment Plant including water systems, water supply sources, and water distribution systems.
Mix and add chemicals to maintain quality drinking water.
Act in accordance with all OSHA guidelines and standards.
Adhere to all EPA and Department of Health Guidelines and laws.
Inventory and maintain equipment and supplies; safeguard equipment and supplies.
Arrange for purchases and receive supplies and equipment necessary for the operation of the Water Plant.
Check equipment condition, perform operations and safety checks, maintain tools, and report the need for repairs.
Fuel, grease, inspect, clean, and perform minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment.
Identify and perform preventive maintenance as necessary.
Monitor and evaluate work-related conditions for compliance with regulations.
Coordinate system interruptions with management and affected departments.
Educate co-workers on system operation.
Perform boiler checks and basic boiler operation as relief.
Suggest and recommend possible projects to management for future budgets.
Supplies own hand tools and basic test equipment.
Learn and utilize new methods, materials, procedures, and systems.
Read and comprehend technical manuals, diagrams, and blueprints.
Clearly communicate results of efforts, problem resolution steps, and completed tasks, verbally and in writing.
Collect, retain, and report accurate records and prepare administrative reports.
Demonstrate proficiency with Windows-based operating systems and software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
Perform basic mathematical functions.
Listen well, communicate effectively, and establish effective working relationships.
Work productively and efficiently with or without supervision when performing routine tasks.
Identify problems, formulate solutions, direct action, and take corrective follow-up action.
Attend and participate in staff operation and safety meetings.
Safely use all types of power and hand tools of the trade.
Work in a manner that will not endanger oneself or others.
Operate automatic and standard transmission vehicles safely.
Identify safety hazards, report, and follow up to see that corrective action is taken.
Inform manager of hazardous situations, emergencies, or threats to security.
Perform inspections by touch, sight, sound, and smell for conformance to prescribed standards.
Speak, read, and write the English language and communicate clearly and congenially.
Hear verbal instructions, directions, and warnings.
Reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, flex arms, walk up and down stairs/inclines, sit, climb ladders, or stand for up to 3-4 hours at a time.
Perform work at heights up to 80 feet.
Lift up to 75 pounds and carry a distance of up to 30 feet.
Walk up to 5 miles per day.
Work in close quarters, extreme heat and cold, outdoors and exposed to natural elements.
See close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Analyze problems and develop and implement action plans.
Maintain a flexible work schedule including days/nights, weekdays/weekends, holidays, and during peak periods.
Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
Work additional hours beyond regularly scheduled work day.
Work on short notice to effect emergency repairs 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
Maintain a pleasant personality under trying conditions.

Requirements

Valid Driver’s License and at least 21 years of age, or 20 years of age with at least two years of licensed driving experience.
Possess (or obtain) and maintain a valid New York State Water Operation and Distribution License, Class IIA.
Must have at least five (5) years experience in a related field.
