About the Role

You will own Quadrants end-to-end, including the API, IR and lowering, optimization passes, numerical primitives, and the roadmap. The ultimate objective is for engineers to write for readability and maintainability, not performance, with Quadrants rebuilding their algorithms into highly optimized kernels. This role requires both low-level GPU and compiler skills, and the ability to maintain system coherence as it grows. Usability is prioritized over performance, with escape hatches available for experts.

Responsibilities

  • Own the API and authoring experience, ensuring it is idiomatic and natural for Python users.
  • Manage the IR, lowering, and backends, maintaining a stable IR with room for growth.
  • Implement optimizations to transform naive code into efficient execution plans.
  • Own correctness, benchmarks, and regression tracking for core primitives like Cholesky and matmul.
  • Monitor Genesis and the compiler together, hunting for performance wins and proposing API improvements.
  • Manage the project as a product, benchmarking workloads, tracking performance, and engaging with users.

Requirements

  • Reason about whole systems and understand where complexity should reside.
  • Measure before optimizing, focusing on memory traffic and launch overhead.
  • Have strong opinions about API design.
  • Write tests and benchmarks proactively.
  • Understand optimal GPU performance, including access patterns, registers, shared memory, barriers, atomics, and threading.
  • Possess CPU intuition.
  • Write idiomatic Python and understand what feels natural to Python users.
  • Design APIs that free users rather than constrain them.
  • Understand the compiler path from authoring to kernels (IR, lowering, optimization) and weigh it against maintainability.
  • Be proactive and largely self-directed.
  • Fetch context across the company independently.
  • Be comfortable talking to engineers who use the built product.
  • Be at ease designing in the open for unknown users.
  • Be ready to grow into leading a small team in the near term.
  • Treat understanding as real work, not overhead.
  • Read and challenge the codebase.
  • Take ownership of what you write.
  • Monitor the competition and emerging trends.
  • Utilize AI agents as productivity tools.

About the Company

  • Quadrants is an open-source translation layer that optimizes Python into machine code at runtime for CPU and GPU backends.
  • The company's ambition is to build the world's best Python compiler for physics and performance-critical numerical computing.
  • Quadrants is a standalone project with its own roadmap, built in the open.
  • Genesis, a physics simulator, is the first and top-priority user of Quadrants.
  • The core bet is that high-performance code should feel natural to write in plain Python.
  • The company is committed to pushing the limits of performance and defining the state of the art in compiler technology.
