About the Role

The Deputy Head of Video reports to and supports the UK Head of Video in delivering the video strategy, overseeing daily editorial operations, and ensuring the production of high-quality, impactful journalism. This role has specific responsibility for the Guardian’s video news features, leading the delivery of ambitious original journalism on YouTube and establishing a distinctive video proposition to expand reach and impact.

Responsibilities

Lead and line manage producers in the video news features team
Coordinate commissioning and production of longform features and documentaries with the Head of Video and Head of Documentaries
Collaborate with the Head of Shortform Video to deliver the Guardian’s video strategy across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Guardian platforms
Act as a senior editorial decision-maker for video content, deputizing for the Head of Video
Ensure video output reflects the organisation’s editorial values, standards, and brand
Work with editors and reporters to identify stories for distinctive video news features
Drive audience growth, engagement, and watch time on YouTube
Monitor performance and audience insights to inform commissioning decisions and strategy
Ensure efficient workflows and effective resource allocation within the news features video team
Coordinate commissioning, production schedules, and publishing priorities for news features video
Support the Head of Video in coaching and developing the video department and setting best practices
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, dynamic, and high-performing team culture
Collaborate with audience, social teams, and marketing to maximize reach and engagement
Promote video-first thinking and work with Project Berger teams on programmes that enable colleagues to develop video skills
This is an office-based role and will not involve regular on-the-ground shooting

Requirements

Significant experience in video journalism, digital publishing, or broadcast news
Significant experience as an executive producer
Strong editorial judgment and understanding of journalistic standards
Experience managing editorial teams and production workflows
Significant experience of shooting and editing video
Proven track record of delivering a varied portfolio of high-quality long form video content for broadcast or digital audiences
Strong understanding of YouTube analytics
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines
Experience commissioning freelancers and managing production budgets
Actively demonstrate inclusive leadership by promoting equity, valuing diverse perspectives, and addressing barriers that affect your team
Demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
