About the Role
The Occupational Therapist (OT) provides client-centered assessment, intervention, and consultation services to medically complex clients to enhance functional independence in self-care, productivity, and leisure activities. The OT develops and implements individualized, measurable care goals and addresses occupational performance challenges related to physical, cognitive, and environmental factors. The role includes delivering evidence-informed care, providing education, and supporting the use of adaptive equipment.
Responsibilities
- Partner with clients and families to formulate and implement individualized client-centered goals with focused, targeted and measurable outcomes.
- Provide client care in collaboration with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care, documenting the habilitative/rehabilitative process.
- Interface and problem solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers to ensure an integrated approach to care.
- Incorporate evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
- Demonstrate strong critical thinking/reasoning and utilize research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
- Utilize the teaching/learning process to provide education on various conditions to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals.
- Provide direct service, consultation, and education to clients, families, and community providers with focus on maximizing client function in self-care, productivity, and leisure.
- Address challenges identified in client occupational performance through assessment and intervention directed at the person, occupation, and environmental factors.
- Practice according to organizational policies and standards of practice as set out by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and Safehaven.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment, and advance a culture of client/patient safety.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy or Master's degree in Occupational Therapy
- Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- Knowledge of and experience in occupational therapy assessment and treatment of children and youth with a variety of conditions
- Knowledge of and experience with occupational therapy assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications
- Knowledge and experience with a wide variety of lifts and transfers from wheelchairs, beds, bathtubs, toilets, etc.
- Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Goal Attainment Scaling, manual muscle testing, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities effectively and efficiently
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a solution-focused manner with clients, families and the interprofessional care team
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development
- Experience with being a positive change agent and engagement in quality improvement initiatives is an asset
