About the Role
We are seeking engineers to develop manufacturing inspection software, conduct hands-on evaluations, analyze defects, and implement processes for PlayStation's core custom SoCs and product hardware. You will work across hardware and software boundaries, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to ensure quality.
Responsibilities
- Develop diagnostic software to verify the functionality, performance, and reliability of custom SoCs and PlayStation hardware.
- Define test items and pass/fail criteria based on anticipated defects and required quality.
- Design and implement test software, stress tests, and inspection sequences for manufacturing processes.
- Improve inspection content considering test stability, execution time, and detection range.
- Coordinate development plans and test specifications with manufacturing schedules from prototyping to mass production.
- Conduct hands-on verification of developed inspection software, implement it in manufacturing processes, and provide post-implementation technical support.
- Evaluate the functionality and performance of CPU, GPU, Display Controller, Video Codec, Audio Processor, memory, PCIe, USB, storage, and network components.
- Bring up and perform initial evaluations of prototype chips and hardware.
- Reproduce defects detected in development, manufacturing, or the market, and investigate causes using logs, register values, and test results.
- Isolate the cause of defects within hardware, firmware, Linux kernel, device drivers, or test environments.
- Design additional tests necessary for cause identification and verify the effectiveness of fixes or workarounds.
- Develop and evaluate boot firmware, bootloaders, BIOS/UEFI, Linux kernels, and device drivers.
- Design and verify hardware initialization, boot sequences, and power state transitions.
- Analyze boot and system failures across hardware, firmware, and Linux kernels.
- Develop low-level software, test code, and debugging features for new hardware functionalities.
- Evaluate and improve boot time, stability, and compatibility.
- Develop and maintain boot and control functions used by manufacturing inspection and diagnostic software.
- Design and build automated test environments connecting multiple evaluation units.
- Automate build, software distribution, test execution, result collection, and log aggregation using tools like Jenkins.
- Develop and operate continuous execution environments for regression tests, long-term continuous tests, and stress tests.
- Develop systems to manage test targets, execution conditions, expected results, and pass/fail judgments.
- Prioritize automation items based on their impact on development and evaluation, and improve execution time, detection range, and log quality.
- Develop control, monitoring, and recovery functions for stable operation of numerous evaluation units.
- Engage in technical discussions regarding specifications, design, and evaluation with domestic and international semiconductor vendors and design partners.
- Jointly analyze issues related to chips, firmware, BIOS/UEFI, Linux kernels, and device drivers.
- Organize and share information on reproduction conditions, logs, expected behavior, frequency of occurrence, and impact scope.
- Request fixes from semiconductor vendors based on analysis results and provide technical feedback.
- Reach agreements on fixes, workarounds, evaluation methods, and mass production application.
- Promote problem-solving in collaboration with relevant teams, including overseas engineers.
Requirements
- Experience developing software using C/C++.
- Experience developing or debugging software in a Linux environment.
- Ability to logically isolate issues at the boundary of hardware, firmware, and software.
- Experience proactively driving assigned tasks to resolution in collaboration with relevant teams.
- Experience in one or more of the following specialized areas: boot firmware, bootloaders, BIOS/UEFI, Linux kernel, or device driver development/evaluation.
- Experience developing test software, diagnostic software, or stress tests that control hardware.
- Experience with manufacturing tests, mass production inspection, hardware verification, or prototype chip bring-up.
- Experience designing or verifying hardware functions such as CPU, GPU, SoC, Display, Video, or Audio.
- Experience building CI/CD or automated test environments, including evaluation hardware, using tools like Jenkins.
- Experience analyzing defects spanning hardware, firmware, Linux kernels, and device drivers.
- Ability to read English technical specifications and exchange technical information via email and meetings with overseas semiconductor vendors and engineers.
- Ability to organize reproduction conditions, logs, expected behavior, and impact scope, and explain them clearly to stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate across job roles and departments to drive problem-solving.
