About the Role
You will own how safety is tested, judged, and reported across our QA team. This role focuses on the layer beneath the company's safety framework, defining the gates, criteria, and reports that transform day-to-day testing into actionable evidence. The core challenge involves establishing consistent safety judgment for nuanced situations short of collisions, ensuring the entire team applies these criteria uniformly.
Responsibilities
- Own the safety gates, including classification, escalation, and closure criteria for safety-relevant findings.
- Define and own the acceptance criteria for each gate, including thresholds for collisions, near misses, right-of-way, and hard braking.
- Define the format for safety reports to ensure comparability, clarity on coverage, and conciseness.
- Coach the QA team through calibration sessions and report reviews to foster independent application of safety judgment.
- Serve as the safety representative in release decisions, clearly communicating testing results and unknowns.
- Connect hazard analysis output (STPA, FMEA, HAZOP) to testing scenarios, results, and the safety case.
- Translate the safety framework into testable requirements in collaboration with the Head of Safety.
- Collaborate with development and analytics on tooling for measurable requirements.
- Track and incorporate relevant standards and regulations governing driverless operation into testing practices.
Requirements
- 7+ years in testing, verification, or validation, with ownership of a lasting process (e.g., a gate, review, reporting standard).
- Experience where errors had physical consequences (e.g., autonomous vehicles, aviation, medical devices, rail, industrial automation, defense).
- Hazard-driven thinking, starting from potential failures and defining necessary tests.
- Comfort with residual risk, clearly articulating unknowns and accepted risks.
- Ability to influence without direct authority, persuading colleagues through sound arguments.
- A proactive approach to data verification, checking underlying metrics rather than relying solely on dashboards.
- Fluent use of LLMs for analyzing standards, logs, results, and drafting documents.
- Excellent written English skills, as decisions will rely on your documentation.
