About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Applied Scientist to lead the intelligence layer for our Parts Agent, a key component of our Inventory & EAM roadmap. This role involves developing decision models, optimization routines, and AI-powered tools to address critical inventory questions such as reorder timing, stock level optimization, stockout risk assessment, and supplier catalog reconciliation. You will shape the modeling approach, collaborate with product and design teams, and deliver iteratively based on customer feedback.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve optimization and ML models for Parts Agent capabilities, including reorder point prediction, economic order quantity, multi-site stock balancing, and demand forecasting.
- Design and implement advanced inventory intelligence features like vendor lead time modeling, criticality-weighted safety stock, substitution graph traversal, and proactive stockout alerting.
- Build and maintain APIs and tools to integrate these models with GenAI agent workflows, enabling grounded and explainable actions.
- Collaborate with Product Management and Design to translate real-world inventory challenges into tractable models, ensuring alignment with operator needs.
- Iterate with users through design partnerships and pilot deployments, incorporating feedback from parts managers and procurement teams.
- Contribute to the surrounding Python service, focusing on performance, observability, testing, and reliability.
- Shape the integration of parts intelligence into the broader MaintainX product, leveraging historical data for continuous model improvement.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering or data science experience, with significant focus on optimization, forecasting, or ML systems deployed to users.
- Strong proficiency in at least one optimization paradigm (LP/MILP, stochastic programming, simulation) and practical experience with demand forecasting or inventory management models.
- Solid Python service engineering skills, including APIs, async programming, testing, profiling, and observability.
- Academic background in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
- Proven track record of iterating data-driven systems with real users, adapting approaches based on feedback.
- Product mindset and delivery orientation, focusing on operator outcomes.
- Comfort with ambiguity and co-designing data models and feature schemas.
- Familiarity with GenAI tooling, including LLM tool calling, structured output, and prompt design for constrained generation.
