About the Role
This role is primarily responsible for receiving and accessioning specimens, handling specimen documentation, and data entry of requisitions. The position also involves maintaining lab cleanliness and orderliness, and understanding specimen integrity issues. Flexibility in work schedules is required.
Responsibilities
- Accessioning clinical specimens upon receipt and entering data into LIS system.
- Specimen verification, labeling, tracking, and all related clerical functions.
- Identifying specimen processing problems that may affect test results and notifying the supervisor.
- Documenting corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
- Following established laboratory policies and procedures.
- Understanding compliance regulations related to test ordering.
- Complying with company policies, procedures, safety requirements, and regulations.
- Contributing to laboratory safety by complying with procedures and making recommendations for improvement.
- Engaging in training and competency assessments.
- Attending and participating in department meetings.
- Participating in activities associated with regulatory compliance and inspections.
- Assisting in continuous improvement activities/projects.
- Assisting in research and validation activities.
- Performing weekly, monthly, and other periodic room and equipment maintenance procedures.
- Tracking and stocking laboratory supplies.
- Performing general clean-up tasks, including breaking down shipping boxes, disinfecting lab benches, and putting away supplies.
- Working cooperatively in a team environment and supporting senior laboratory and management staff.
- Working cross-functionally with Customer Care regarding specimen issues and Accessioning requests.
- Completing other related administrative duties, including printing, copying, filing, faxing, and quality control of spreadsheets.
Requirements
- 0-2 years of accessioning experience and/or in a lab setting.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to navigate efficiently through, or have familiarity with, various laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint).
- Good judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent teamwork and collaborations skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Repetitive movement of hands, arms and legs.
- Repetitive movement of fingers (typing and/or writing).
- Sitting, with occasional walking, standing, stooping and moving about.
- Talking and hearing.
- Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
