About the Role
Crusoe is seeking a Data Center Design Manager to optimize data center designs based on space, power, and cost constraints. This role bridges engineering and business, requiring collaboration with various departments to ensure design decisions align with commercial realities. The manager will drive rack density and power delivery improvements while managing costs, acting as a liaison between design engineers and business stakeholders to achieve optimal site economics.
Responsibilities
- Lead trade-off analysis across space, power density, and cost for new data center designs.
- Identify opportunities to increase compute per rack and per square foot without compromising reliability.
- Translate commercial requirements (cost targets, delivery timelines, customer commitments) into concrete design specifications.
- Evaluate power distribution, cooling architecture (air, liquid, immersion), and their impact on achievable rack density.
- Build and maintain models comparing design alternatives on total installed cost and cost per kW, per rack, and per square foot.
- Develop repeatable design standards and reference architectures for site deployment.
- Assess new data center technologies for potential improvements in density, cost, or deployment speed.
- Run design review sessions to validate that designs meet technical requirements and commercial targets.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in data center design, engineering, or infrastructure planning.
- Direct exposure to power, cooling, and space optimization trade-offs.
- Strong understanding of data center electrical and mechanical systems (power distribution, UPS, cooling architectures, structural/floor loading).
- Demonstrated experience partnering with commercial or business teams to translate cost and timeline constraints into engineering decisions.
- Comfort building and using cost models to compare design alternatives quantitatively.
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to work fluently with both engineers and business stakeholders.
- Experience with high-density compute environments (AI/ML, HPC, or GPU-dense infrastructure) strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Advanced degree a plus.
