About the Role

Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center provides emergency shelter and support services to families transitioning into long-term housing. The Residential Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring resident safety, enforcing program policies, and assisting residents in developing independent living skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure resident safety by controlling facility access and permitting entry only to authorized individuals.
  • Enforce house rules and program policies while maintaining clear expectations, boundaries, and accountability.
  • Teach and assist residents in developing independent living skills, including housekeeping, personal hygiene, cooperation, and personal responsibility.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution with residents and complete incident reports, grievance documentation, and related records.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies by assessing situations and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation and recordkeeping, including observation reports, shift logs, and incident reports.
  • Collaborate with case managers and other program staff to ensure effective communication and service coordination.
  • Assist with shelter readiness for incoming families, including maintaining kitchen, dining, and food storage areas and preparing meals and snacks.
  • Participate in assigned program events, training sessions, staff meetings, and supervisory meetings.
  • Complete assigned shift responsibilities, including hourly rounds, mail distribution, and resident room inspections.
  • Provide front desk and telephone reception services while maintaining resident confidentiality and privacy.
  • Document and report unusual events or incidents to appropriate leadership.
  • Coordinate or arrange resident transportation as assigned.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Perform deep cleaning of the facility, including common areas, restrooms, and shared spaces (Graveyard Shift).
  • Wash, fold, and organize program laundry and linens as needed (Graveyard Shift).
  • Provide additional support with program operations and kitchen cleaning activities as needed (Graveyard Shift).
  • Monitor and supervise resident activities in the library and computer lab (Swing Shift).
  • Facilitate resident house meetings and promote participation (Swing Shift).
  • Supervise meal and snack service and maintain cleanliness of the dining room and kitchen following service (Swing Shift).

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Basic knowledge of substance use disorders and mental health conditions.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and respond appropriately by accessing necessary medical, behavioral health, and social service resources.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop systems and processes to track data and monitor outcomes.
  • Knowledge of sanitation standards and Universal Precautions, including HIV/AIDS protocols.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications.
  • Knowledge of mandated reporting requirements related to working with children.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Demonstrates a results-oriented approach to work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to providing client-centered services.
  • Demonstrates organizational awareness and an understanding of agency operations and goals.
  • Ability to work in a primarily office-based environment, including sitting for extended periods and frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and move throughout office, and yard areas as needed.
  • Occasional repetitive motions, including frequent use of the wrists, hands, and fingers to perform job-related tasks.
  • Medium work: Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds; and continuously exert up to 10 pounds of force to move or position objects.
  • Ability to effectively view and process documents, data, and computer screens to perform assigned duties accurately.
  • Requires sufficient visual acuity to accurately review, complete, and maintain documentation, monitor resident and facility activities, and perform assigned duties safely and effectively.
  • Work is performed within a residential shelter environment and may include regular interaction with residents and their guests.
  • Environment may include frequent activity, multiple children, and moderate to high noise levels.
  • Work is performed in an older facility that has been adapted to support program operations and employee workspaces.
  • Occasional interaction with residents experiencing heightened stress, frustration, or emotional distress, requiring the ability to remain calm, exercise sound judgment, and utilize de-escalation techniques when appropriate.
  • Fingerprints required.
  • TB Screening - Negative required.

  • Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center is one of three emergency family housing facilities offering shelter to San Francisco families prior to transition into long-term or supportive housing.
  • Through Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center program, families receive three to six months emergency shelter, three meals daily, on-site case management, counseling and crisis intervention.
  • With assistance from staff, families are assessed and referred to relevant agencies.
  • St. Joseph’s offers money management and job search support, parenting workshops and activity programs geared to assist families in maintaining healthy relationships.
