About the Role
Makai Labs builds AI systems to automate real work within companies. As a Forward Deployed AI Analyst, you will train with Makai's teams, then embed with clients to identify automatable workflows and build AI agents to handle them. You will work directly with business leaders, and your success is measured by your team's reliance on your solutions. This is an early-career role focused on understanding business operations, becoming a subject matter expert, and improving workflows through iterative prototyping.
Responsibilities
- Train with Makai's engineering, product, and client teams.
- Embed in client engagements to find workflows worth automating.
- Build AI agents to handle identified workflows.
- Work directly with business leaders to understand and improve their processes.
- Learn how work is done today through interviews with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
- Read client documents and map involved systems.
- Propose automation opportunities based on discovery.
- Collaborate with client teams to write specifications.
- Build prototypes on Makai's platform with engineering support.
- Run rollouts and measure productivity and ROI for successful prototypes.
- Identify non-viable solutions during discovery or user testing.
- Develop towards career paths in AI engineering, product and implementation, or engagement leadership.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ownership both inside and outside the classroom.
- Experience building a product, tool, model, startup, research system, or internal process.
- Experience leading a club, team, lab effort, athletic group, event, or high-pressure project.
- Experience taking a messy internship project and turning it into a usable solution.
- Occasional travel may be required for training, client work, or company visits.
- No VISA sponsorship available.
Skills
- Python, JavaScript, SQL, or another programming/data-analysis language.
- APIs, workflow automation, backend services, internal tools, or scripting.
- LLMs, retrieval, agents, structured outputs, prompt design, or AI evaluation.
- Data analysis, spreadsheets, dashboards, process mining, or financial/operating models.
- Product specs, user stories, QA testing, Jira, Azure DevOps, or agile delivery.
- Research, internships, startups, team leadership, athletics, or other high-accountability work.
