About the Role
The Toronto Blue Jays are seeking motivated individuals for entry-level opportunities across Baseball Operations, including Scouting, Player Development, High Performance, and Research & Development/Analytics. These paid positions offer flexible start and end dates and can be full or partial season. Roles may be based in Toronto, ON; Dunedin, FL; or affiliate locations in Canada, the US, or the Dominican Republic. Hiring for some roles may commence in the offseason.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the point person for video, technology, and data resources.
- Deploy and operate technology for recording data during practice and game settings.
- Organize, catalog, distribute, and review video and data/advance resources for affiliate staff and other PD personnel.
- Contribute to advance scouting and game planning preparation and delivery.
- Help track player goals and progress and collaborate across departments to support projects and processes.
- Assist with on-field activities and day-to-day logistical needs of the team.
- Organize, enter, and maintain data and/or video resources.
- Support departmental administrative tasks and respond to ad-hoc logistical or organizational needs.
- Contribute to player evaluation processes through review of video and data.
- Translate documents to/from English and Spanish (Player Development department).
- Assist with integration of technology into on-field or lab work (Player Development department).
- Support the Major League team or a minor league affiliate team with game-by-game and series-by-series preparation.
- Collect and organize statistics for scouting reports, identifying patterns in player performance and team tendencies.
- Edit and assemble video clips/visual presentations relevant to upcoming matchups.
- Conduct ad-hoc research and analysis on players or the game of baseball.
- Watch video to provide written evaluations and insights to coaching staff, helping to shape game strategies.
- Support on-field video and data collection during games and practice, and operate game-prep technology.
- Use analytical reporting and/or data science skills to create new game preparation resources, post-game or performance feedback reports, or other tools to support the team.
- Conduct self-directed research using R, Python, SQL or similar tools.
- Work on areas like data acquisition, organization, and cleaning, as well as statistical modeling and visualization.
- Present research findings to front office members, coaches, or players.
- Provide logistical support during major baseball events like the Draft or Trade Deadline.
- Design intuitive front-end web interfaces for internal baseball information systems.
- Collaborate with end users to gather requirements, ensuring systems meet operational needs.
- Engineer systems to acquire and store new datasets, improving data accessibility.
- Analyze biomechanical, sports science, and baseball datasets, uncover trends, maintain data quality, and deliver meaningful insights.
- Build reports, dashboards, and data visualizations to communicate findings to coaches, players, and front office staff.
- Research and evaluate emerging technologies, analytical methods, and scientific literature relevant to player performance and health.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across Scouting, Player Development, High Performance, and R&D to develop and answer research questions.
- Assist with the collection, organization, and management of biomechanical and performance data.
Requirements
- Passion for baseball, with excellent reasoning, problem-solving, creative thinking, and communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with a wide range of individuals.
- Ability to work independently, self-direct tasks, and manage multiple projects with attention to detail.
- Effective time management skills to balance priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the baseball calendar.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
- Microsoft Office (especially Excel) proficiency is crucial.
- Candidates with excellent knowledge of baseball rules and strategy and strong time management and organizational skills will excel here.
- Experience with software engineering and web development is important.
- Experience with data engineering and database management is important.
- Successful candidates will be curious, self-directed learners with strong problem-solving skills and an interest in using data to answer complex questions in baseball.
