About the Role
The Legal Aid Society (LAS) offers law school students opportunities to engage in impactful litigation and policy initiatives addressing systemic issues faced by clients. Interns will be assigned to one of several law reform units, contributing to their work on novel legal issues.
Responsibilities
- Engage in legal research
- Conduct factual research
- Interview clients
- Participate in discovery and trial practice
- Contribute to legal papers, policy memos, or legislative testimony
- Perform other tasks as assigned
Requirements
- Must be a 2L student in good standing
- Demonstrate interest in working on issues affecting the rights of Legal Aid’s clients, tailored to prioritized units
- Possess excellent research, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to analyze complex legal and policy issues
- Demonstrate initiative to see projects through to completion
- Commitment to racial and social justice
- Be enrolled as a law student at any accredited institution (for stipend consideration)
- Ultimately be accepted to participate in an internship program at LAS (for stipend consideration)
- Demonstrate financial need (for stipend consideration)
- Lack funding for their internship (for stipend consideration)

About the Company
- The law reform units of the Legal Aid Society (LAS) work on impact litigation and policy initiatives.
- The Criminal Defense Practice Law Reform team includes the Special Litigation Unit, Prisoners’ Rights Project, Incarcerated Client Services Unit, and Decarceration Unit.
- Other units include the Law Reform Unit of the Civil Practice (including Homeless Rights Unit), Special Litigation and Law Reform Unit of the Juvenile Rights Practice, and LGBTQ+ Law and Policy Initiative Unit.
- These units engage in impact litigation, policy reform, coalition building, and public education strategies.
