About the Role

Improve local housing standards and protect resident health across our borough. As a Housing and Health Practitioner, you’ll play a key role in ensuring every private rented property offers a safe, decent and secure place to live. It’s a role with genuine frontline impact – a chance to tackle poor housing conditions and protect the health, safety and welfare of local residents.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out inspections to address critical issues like damp and mould
  • Processing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licences
  • Drafting detailed schedules of work
  • Participating in community days of action
  • Upholding standards through the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Handling reactive complaints
  • Enforcing legislation under the Renters’ Rights Act to protect residents
  • Collaborating closely with internal services like Trading Standards, as well as external partners including the police and fire brigade
  • Preparing legal reports
  • Issuing enforcement notices
  • Presenting evidence at courts or tribunals

Requirements

  • Practical experience in private sector housing enforcement
  • Experience investigating complaints
  • Experience processing HMO licensing applications
  • Experience applying relevant housing legislation
  • Proficiency with standard office software
  • Ability to manage a busy caseload efficiently
  • Ability to build positive relationships with both landlords and residents
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments
  • A 'getting stuck in' mindset
  • Standard DBS check required

Location

  • Borough (3 days/week)
  • Home (2 days/week)

Work Type

Experience Level

  • Practical experience in private sector housing enforcement

Education Level

  • Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health recognised by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (or equivalent)
  • Completion of a recognised two-day HHSRS assessor training course

Salary/Compensations

  • New hires will start at the minimum of the advertised salary range
  • Employees receive annual salary increases until they reach the top of the pay scale
