About the Role

LEEP is seeking a driven, judgmental, and technically confident individual to lead the development of a lead-free alternative to lead-adulterated surma, aiming to prevent widespread childhood lead poisoning. Prior subject-matter expertise is not required, but demonstrated technical confidence and experience managing complex specialist work outside your own core expertise are essential.

Responsibilities

Build a credible, lead-free alternative to surma for manufacturers across Pakistan, India, Egypt, Morocco, and elsewhere.
Collaborate with cosmetic chemists, analytical laboratories, sourcing specialists, process engineers, and advisers on traditional medicine and religious acceptability.
Balance technical requirements, religious and cultural requirements, marketing, and affordability.
Operate quickly and effectively with high autonomy and self-direction.
Understand new and complex topics at a nuanced, detailed level.
Be highly strategic, tenacious, and able to collaborate with and understand diverse stakeholders.
Spend time in low- and middle-income countries where the problem exists.
Interrogate technical work, challenge specialist advice, and make judgment calls between competing recommendations.
Test claims and build counter-cases by evaluating scientific, traditional-medicine, and religious claims.
Work with scholars of Unani, Tibb, Ayurveda, and Islamic jurisprudence to ensure reformulated products are compatible with traditions.
Manage the testing pathway, including commissioning and interpreting analytical characterization, safety, stability, and consumer testing.
Understand reformulation requirements in production, including scale-up, equipment segregation, decontamination, and capital costs.
Commission engineering and industrial hygiene expertise.
Design outputs that work beyond a single manufacturer or country.
Produce guidance for other manufacturers and LEEP programs.
Own the technical reformulation workstream in close partnership with LEEP country teams.
Develop and independently validate at least two promising lead-free formulations for one priority country within the first six months.
Establish indicative cost and manufacturing requirements for formulations.
Conduct initial consumer and cultural-acceptability testing.
Replicate formulations for three more priority countries in the second six months.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience hiring, directing, and holding accountable consultants, laboratories, or technical staff in areas outside your expertise.
Ability to quickly grasp unfamiliar technical material to a depth that allows for interrogation.
Comfort with ambiguity, ability to move quickly, and willingness to make decisions without complete information.
Willingness to engage seriously with traditional and religious knowledge systems on their own terms.
Experience working in low- and middle-income countries.
Skilled use of AI tools for rapid technical field understanding, with judgment regarding their limitations.
Willingness to travel at least 8-12 weeks per year.
Strong, sustained commitment to producing market-ready products quickly and cost-effectively.
Ability to propose fee expectations.
Located within UTC-5 to UTC+5 time zones.
Full professional proficiency in English.

A background in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, medicine, pharmacy or a related discipline is beneficial.
Experience in cosmetics, personal care, pharmaceutical or FMCG product development is beneficial.
Experience reformulating a product to remove or replace a specific ingredient is beneficial.
Experience commissioning and interpreting laboratory analysis is beneficial.
Experience with unit-cost modelling, supplier qualification, or manufacturing scale-up is beneficial.
Experience working with traditional, heritage or faith-based product categories is beneficial.
Experience working with remote, geographically distributed teams is beneficial.
