About the Role
Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Structural Engineer in Training to join our Structural Engineering team. This role involves performing calculations, modeling, redlining, detailing, and assisting with specifications, RFIs, and OOCs under the guidance of a Project Manager or Project Engineer. The position offers the opportunity to interact with design architects and contribute to various project phases, from initial design to construction administration.
Responsibilities
- Become knowledgeable with internal systems for structural calculations, structural drawings and construction administration.
- Perform routine structural calculations assigned by Project Manager by hand and with the assistance of design programs and internal spreadsheets.
- Develop personal familiarity with material codes (concrete, steel, wood, masonry, light gauge) and internal resources.
- Perform gravity design of beams, columns, studs, etc including connection design.
- Perform lateral design of shear walls, steel braces and LG X-Braces.
- Perform uplift design.
- Perform foundation design.
- Become familiar with design codes and methodologies for various materials including Wood and Light Gauge, Steel, Concrete and CMU.
- Hand sketch redlines on structural drawings for drafting technicians.
- Review structural drawings for compliance with redlines, architecture and internal standards.
- Open and manipulate architectural drawings to verify the work of drafting technicians and investigate coordination issues.
- Prepare calculation and drawing packages for review by Project Managers or Project Engineers.
- Review material submittals and shop drawings for conformance with structural drawings.
- Assist with inspections, field investigations & surveys.
- Edit and compile relevant specification sections addressing structural items.
- Coordinate with Architect on specification sections and format.
- Respond to Requests For Information (RFIs) and provide solutions to field issues with input from Project Engineer or Project Manager.
Requirements
- 2+ years of professional building structural engineering experience required.
- E.I.T. required.
- Possess an intermediate to advanced understanding of structural design software such RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS, etc. with a willingness to learn and adapt to new software.
- A willingness to learn and adapt to new software and client needs.
- Understanding of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design principles.
- Light gauge experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of current building and material design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI318, ACI 530 or NDS.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills.
- Able to work independently and also collaboratively on a team.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
