About the Role

The Teacher Assistant helps the Master Teacher in planning and implementing age-appropriate activities for preschool children, ensuring their safety, and carrying out Head Start performance standards. This role involves conducting home visits, leading the classroom in the Master Teacher's absence, and performing bus monitor duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities for preschool children.
  • Ensure the safety of the children.
  • Carry out Head Start performance standards.
  • Conduct home visits.
  • Assume the lead role in the classroom during the absence of the Master Teacher.
  • Perform required recordkeeping.
  • Perform bus monitor duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a licensed or registered early childhood setting required.
  • Candidate must be supportive and non-judgmental in working with children and families.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of program and agency related information.
  • Must serve as an advocate for children and families.
  • Must be a team player and cooperate with all Head Start staff to provide quality programming.
  • Must be able to observe and record the behaviors of children and keep accurate detailed records.
  • Must possess proficient computer skills.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Employment is conditional pending a satisfactory medical exam and TB test.
  • Employment is conditional pending clearances from the NYS Child Abuse Central Register and NYS Office of Children and Family Services at time of hire.
  • Employee will be required to sign an annual affidavit stating they have not been indicated in a child abuse or neglect case within the past year.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, walk, bend, and kneel to child's eye level.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
