About the Role

As an engineer on SimpliSafe's Video team, you will build and maintain cloud-based systems that enable customers to interact with their home security cameras remotely. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Software Engineer to design, develop, maintain, and own software solutions, focusing on large-scale video streaming and recording problems to ensure customers have real-time control and visibility into their cameras.

Responsibilities

Partner with internal stakeholders to understand requirements and design simple, reliable, flexible solutions.
Drive the implementation of solutions through personal coding, code reviews, and mentoring.
Perform long-term support and maintenance, including performance optimization, bug fixes, feature additions, design improvements, and automation.
Document systems to ensure maintainability for future developers.
Serve as an on-call first responder for team-owned software.

Requirements

8+ years of industry experience, including end-to-end ownership of a production backend system architecture.
2+ years designing, building, or operating a real-time or low-latency video streaming service (e.g., HLS/DASH delivery or WebRTC media distribution).
Experience with tools such as WebRTC, GStreamer, ffmpeg, or libav.
Familiarity with video streaming standards (HLS/DASH, fMP4, CMAF, adaptive bitrate packaging), video codecs (H.264, HEVC, AV1), audio codecs (AAC), and transport protocols (SRT, RTMP, WHIP, MoQ).
Extensive experience building and running cloud-based microservices and distributed systems.
Proven ability to mentor engineers and drive technical decision-making.
Proficiency in at least one major programming language (Go, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, etc.).
Extensive experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Excellent problem-solving skills and a proven track record of breaking down complexity.
Familiarity with the Agile Scrum process.
