About the Role

The East Harlem Teaching Residency is a 15-month program that prepares aspiring teachers through rigorous coursework at Hunter College School of Education and a paid residency as a resident teacher at East Harlem Scholars Academies. Residents will complete the program with a Master’s degree in Childhood Education and initial New York State teaching certification.

Responsibilities

Provide small group intervention support with mentor guidance
Teach social studies/science in mentor teacher classroom
Receive Residency team coaching and professional development
Serve as lead teacher in summer school during summer 2028
Enroll in Graduate Coursework
Engage in coursework at Hunter College, both on- and off-site
Complete all requirements for initial teaching certification
Conduct structured observations of and shadow highly effective teachers in Scholars Academies
Receive weekly coaching tailored to your needs as a resident teacher
Receive cohort-based professional development
Engage in ongoing reflection exercises linking theory learned in graduate coursework to actions practiced in the classroom
Implement high leverage teaching practices to teach academic content to elementary age students
Create a classroom culture that is grounded in antiracist teaching practices that honors and affirms all students’ lived experiences
Build positive relationships with the families of EHTP students through frequent communication about students’ progress and ways that families can support their children’s learning

Requirements

Bachelor's degree conferred by June 2027
A liberal arts or sciences major (or interdisciplinary concentration) of at least 30 credits
A liberal arts core including artistic expression, communication, information retrieval, concepts in history and social sciences, humanities, a language other than English, scientific and mathematical processes, and written analysis and expression
U.S. Citizen or National/Permanent Resident status
Applicants must not have taken more than 18 college credits in education
Experience working with students a plus, but not required
Arabic, Mandarin or Spanish speaking candidates are highly encouraged to apply

East Harlem Scholars Academies are community-based Pre-K to 12 public charter schools operated by East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP).
