About the Role
Arbor is generating novel datasets from human and animal studies involving functional ultrasound imaging, electrophysiology, and neuromodulation. The primary responsibility is the analysis of these data and the associated tooling, working closely with a quantitative experimental team. This role involves experiment design, online analysis implementation, and closed-loop control, with opportunities to influence the organization's computational direction.
Responsibilities
- Own analysis of Arbor's experimental data, including functional ultrasound imaging and electrophysiology, along with the tooling that supports it
- Work with the experimental team from study design through interpretation to answer high-priority questions
- Develop image processing tools: registration and alignment, artifact handling, and other data-specific needs
- Help design algorithms for intervention optimization and adaptive experiment design
- Develop online and real-time analysis methods to support closed-loop experiments
- Build methods for integrating data across modalities and scales
- Contribute to high-level scientific decisions about the organization's direction
Requirements
- A strong quantitative background: a PhD, or comparable training in an equally demanding environment such as industry
- Significant depth in several of: signal processing, statistics and inference, machine learning, medical or brain imaging analysis, control theory, computational neuroscience
- Strong coding skills
- A significant body of independent work
- Judgment to differentiate problems solvable by standard statistical methods from those requiring more sophisticated approaches, with a preference for simpler solutions
- Self-starter with the ability to find the shortest effective path to the scientific goal
- Direct communication style: state thoughts clearly, ask questions when unsure, and avoid competition with colleagues
- Desire to learn neuroscience
- Experience in a professional software development environment (nice to have)
- Public record of algorithm or code development on GitHub or similar (nice to have)
- Experience with ultrasound, neural, or medical imaging data (nice to have)
- Prior work in a research setting where tooling had to be built independently (nice to have)
