About the Role

Arbor Neuroscience is seeking an individual to ensure the existence of necessary hardware for scientific experiments. This role involves understanding experimental constraints, collaborating with engineering partners, and developing portable, robust systems for human and animal studies. The position requires a blend of mechanical, electrical, and bioengineering expertise, with the ability to manage in-house development and external contractors. The role offers the opportunity to shape the future of Arbor and its hardware platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with scientists to understand experimental needs and translate them into hardware requirements.
  • Own the company's involvement in Forest 1 development, including performance characterization, defining future needs, and collaborating with the engineering partner.
  • Design, build, and assist in validating hardware for a novel platform combining bidirectional electrophysiology and ultrasound in animals.
  • Develop implants, headstage interfaces, simple circuit boards, and test rigs for animal studies.
  • Make the Forest 1 system portable and robust for out-of-clinic use.
  • Determine which hardware components should be developed in-house versus contracted out, and manage external contractors.
  • Prepare hardware platforms for external use by ensuring documentation, reproducibility, and robustness.

Requirements

  • Depth in at least one of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or bioengineering.
  • Sufficient working knowledge of other engineering disciplines to identify needs and appropriate resources.
  • A proven track record of building functional physical systems such as instruments, devices, or rigs.
  • Experience in environments with evolving or unclear requirements.
  • Credibility and judgment to effectively collaborate with external engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with CAD software.
  • Comfort with simple board design.
  • A network of contacts for outsourcing work.
  • Genuine interest in the experimental and clinical applications of the hardware.
  • Direct communication style, willingness to ask questions, and a collaborative approach.
  • Willingness to acquire a background in neuroscience.
