About the Role
As a Principal Robotics Software Engineer, you will help define the software architecture that transforms complex robot capabilities into coherent, reliable behavior. You will work across autonomy, perception, controls, and systems software to determine how independently developed capabilities compose into a robot that can safely pursue goals, respond to a changing world, and recover gracefully from failures. The behavior and autonomy layer will be central to your work, building systems that translate high-level goals and evolving robot state into coordinated action, managing uncertainty, competing priorities, failures, and safety constraints.
Responsibilities
- Define interfaces and architectural patterns for perception, autonomy, controls, and systems software to compose reliable robot behavior that is modular, debuggable, and extensible.
- Design and build systems that translate goals and robot state into coordinated action, resolving competing priorities and capabilities in a changing physical environment.
- Develop infrastructure enabling robots to use context, history, environmental understanding, and user intent for improved decision-making.
- Own system-level safety, including preconditions, timeouts, fallbacks, and recovery behaviors for subsystem malfunctions.
- Identify and resolve systemic issues such as cross-module latency, timing, resource contention, and cascading failures in collaboration with domain owners.
- Set interface contracts with controls, SLAM, and systems engineers, review designs impacting the entire robot, and elevate the architectural standard.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building robotics software for real-world deployed robots, with expertise across controllers, SLAM, navigation, and system safety.
- End-to-end ownership of at least two robotics software domains.
- Depth in behavior architecture, including behavior trees, hierarchical state machines, or task-level executives at production scale, with an understanding of their limitations.
- Experience designing systems for partial failure, stale or contradictory state, timeouts, preconditions, interruption, cancellation, retries, and recovery.
- Experience integrating learned or probabilistic components into larger systems with uncertain outputs, ensuring observable, recoverable, and trustworthy behavior.
- Skill in cross-stack debugging, tracing behavior bugs through logs, replay, and other codebases.
- Experience designing robot systems with well-defined interfaces that have proven durable over time.
- Strong proficiency in C++ and Python, with software development habits that ensure maintainability.
- Fleet-scale production experience with behavior code running on multiple robots.
- Experience integrating LLM/VLA-driven behavior into deterministic frameworks.
- Experience with navigation stacks, including planning, costmaps, and recovery behaviors on mobile robots.
