About the Role
Weave builds and deploys bimanual robots in customer homes, focusing on the capability, safety, quietness, and efficiency of their actuators. This role involves owning the motor controllers and motors, from design and bring-up to production, ensuring they meet the demands of a robot operating safely in a home environment.
Responsibilities
- Design motor controller boards, including gate drive, power stage, current sensing, MCU, and protection circuitry for in-house actuators across various voltage and current requirements, managing the process from schematic to production.
- Own feedback input interfaces for control loops, such as encoders, halls, phase voltage sensing, and thermistors, ensuring signal conditioning, noise immunity, and accurate timing for current sampling.
- Perform Field-Oriented Control (FOC) bring-up and tuning for new motor and board combinations, including current loop tuning, encoder calibration, motor parameter identification, and torque accuracy verification.
- Design for quiet operation and efficiency by optimizing switching behavior, PWM strategy, thermal design, and EMI/EMC for a consumer product environment.
- Support production by driving Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Testability (DFT), panelization, test point strategy, programming, end-of-line test coverage, and per-unit calibration routines.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience designing motor drive or power electronics hardware, such as inverters, servo drives, robot actuators, or e-mobility products.
- Solid understanding of BLDC/PMSM machine fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience implementing or tuning Field-Oriented Control (FOC) on hardware, including current loops, SVPWM, sensor calibration, and understanding the impact of board design on performance.
- Proficiency in designing complex multilayer PCBs using Altium or similar software, from schematic capture to layout and bring-up, with an understanding of switching-stage layout requirements.
- Experience with communication protocols such as EtherCAT, CAN/CAN FD, SPI, and I²C.
- Comfortable using embedded C or Rust for firmware bring-up and debugging of control behavior.
- Proficiency in using debugging tools like oscilloscopes, current probes, and electronic loads.
