About the Role

Reporting to the Culinary Manager, the Assistant Cook is responsible for the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees. This role involves adhering to menus, production sheets, and dietary guidelines while ensuring food safety and contributing to a positive dining experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver all foods for residents, guests, and employees.
  • Review menus and production sheets before preparing and serving meals attractively.
  • Ensure proper food handling techniques are used.
  • Complete daily temperature audits for refrigeration and record findings.
  • Prepare and serve foods for therapeutic/specialty diets according to planned menus.
  • Make menu substitutions as necessary and record them.
  • Adhere to time schedules for meal and nourishment service.
  • Follow daily production charts, standardized recipes, and menus within budget.
  • Comply with provincial/municipal regulations and dietary department policies.
  • Participate actively in planning and preparing special occasion and theme meals.
  • Attend department and facility staff meetings, in-services, and training sessions.
  • Be aware of and respect Resident Rights & Responsibilities.
  • Participate in the Quality Improvement Program.
  • Follow and comply with health and safety legislation and safe job procedures.
  • Uphold and promote the organization’s values and philosophy regarding ethics, morality, and integrity.
  • Complete all other assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Food Handler's Certificate.
  • Must have experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in a healthcare or retirement setting.
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Provincial Food Premises Regulation and Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
  • Must have knowledge of and experience with special and therapeutic diets.
  • Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for the majority of the shift.
  • Current (within 6 months) Vulnerable Position/Sector Screening (VPS).

Skills

  • Proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.

Education Level

  • Red Seal Certificate preferred

Salary/Compensations

  • $18.61/hourly
