About the Role
Ultra builds industrial AI robots that automate mission-critical warehouse labor. We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the reliability, manufacturability, and cost of Ultra's electronics stack as we scale our fleet. This is a foundational role involved in every step of building future robot models to ensure scalability and supportability.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Ultra's electronics stack is robust for adverse customer environments (heat, dust, vibration, electrical noise) during fleet scaling.
- Debug and resolve intermittent digital communication errors across the fleet to achieve near-zero errors at scale.
- Lead design and component selection for improvements to the electronics stack, including motors, power supplies, communications hardware, and cameras.
- Collaborate with contract manufacturers and vendors for large-scale robot manufacturing, covering cabling, overmolded connectors, and PCBA QA.
- Achieve systematic cost reductions for BOM targets without compromising reliability.
- Execute rapid design loops involving prototyping, validation in lab and field, learning, and refinement.
- Make build-vs-buy decisions for electronics and subsystems, selecting off-the-shelf components or developing custom designs for strategic advantage.
Requirements
- Senior electrical engineer with multiple years of experience shipping robotic or electromechanical systems into production.
- Proven track record of taking hardware from prototype through volume manufacturing and managing consequences of design decisions in the field.
- Portfolio of robust electronics designs.
- Experience hunting down complex bugs: intermittent faults, signal integrity issues, EMI/EMC problems, and failures at scale.
- Ability to think in terms of fleets, understanding the impact of failure modes at scale.
- Thrive in a high-trust, high-autonomy environment, working backwards from customer needs.
- Hungry for impact and personal growth, seeking to build the future of robotics.
- Comfortable with travel to customer and supplier sites.

- Electrical assembly and rework (soldering, cable harness design)
- Root-causing failures on the bench and in the field
- Manufacturing at scale with contract manufacturers and vendors
- Writing specs and quality requirements for manufacturing
- Cost engineering and BOM cost reductions
- Vendor negotiation
- Designing electronics for environmental robustness (thermal extremes, dust, vibration, ESD, electrical noise)
- Communication with customers and vendors
- Mechatronics fluency
- Rapid prototyping (3D printing, basic CAD, machine tools)
- Firmware or embedded software experience
- Fleet-level telemetry, diagnostics, and failure analysis
- EMC/EMI compliance and safety certification experience (UL, CE, FCC)
- Motor control electronics, encoders, and servo systems
- Designing test fixtures and automated test equipment
- Overseas or domestic contract manufacturing ramps (NPI, pilot builds, production release)
