About the Role

This role is a crucial part of the Engineering Leadership Team, requiring flexible working hours. The Technical Superintendent - Dry Dock serves as the Company’s technical representative for all vessel dry dockings. This position supports Vessel Superintendents in developing detailed docking specifications and work scopes, collaborates with the Planning Team for scheduling and preparation, and oversees dry dock facility operations to ensure work is completed safely and to high-quality standards. The role is the technical owner and customer representative for dry dock delivery.

Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations and safe working practices.
Lead the end-to-end docking process from scope development through planning, execution, technical acceptance, and close-out.
Develop detailed docking specifications, repair packages, and technical work scopes with Vessel Superintendents.
Ensure docking scopes are prepared, reviewed, approved, and issued in a timely manner.
Collaborate with the Planning Team to maintain a forward program of docking activities.
Act as the Company’s technical representative during dry dock periods, managing the dry dock facility as a service provider.
Monitor progress, workmanship, and quality during docking activities, addressing poor performance.
Coordinate surveys, statutory inspections, and certification work during docking periods.
Review and manage technical findings and change requests during dockings.
Verify completed work meets specification requirements and formally sign off work packages.
Accept contractor work on behalf of the company upon meeting technical, safety, and quality standards.
Conduct post-docking reviews, capture lessons learned, and identify improvement opportunities.
Develop internal technical knowledge, standards, and processes to reduce reliance on external expertise.
Provide technical expert support for engineers, Vessel Superintendents, planners, and production teams.
Provide technical input for refits, enhancements, upgrades, and modifications.
Support the Engineering Planning and Technical Operations Manager in implementing technical improvements.
Monitor docking defects and technical issues for trends, implementing long-term solutions.
Ensure compliance with applicable maritime regulations.
Ensure the department is prepared for audits.
Support investigations into incidents, defects, and non-conformances.
Provide technical evidence gathering, repair verification, and invoicing support for hull and machinery insurance claims.
Provide temporary cover for Dry Dock Manager responsibilities when required.
Provide cover for vessel superintendents when on leave.
Develop and deliver training on quality standards, safety awareness, and operational best practices.
Identify barriers to change and develop solutions to enable change.
Continuously seek ways to improve personal performance, business processes, and environmental standards.
Undertake other relevant duties as requested by management.

Requirements

Practical engineer with technical vessel management experience, preferably in a technical superintendent, refit, dry dock, or shipyard project environment.
Demonstrable experience of dry docking, refit delivery, vessel repair packages, and technical oversight of contracted works.
Experience managing Statutory and Classification requirements, including coordination of class surveys, statutory inspections, and certification work.
Strong understanding of vessel maintenance planning and preparation of forward programs for docking, defect rectification, and planned maintenance.
Experience in high-speed vessel propulsion systems and high-speed aluminum vessels is preferred.
Fabrication, structural repair, and marine welding knowledge is desirable.
Strong quality assurance, workmanship review, and technical sign-off skills.
Project management experience of bespoke vessel modifications, upgrades, and repair scopes.
Familiarity with the management of ISM compliance and the IMO High Speed Craft Code.
Relevant experience working in high-pressure environments while maintaining high levels of safety, quality, and maintenance practice.
Strong track record in building good working relationships across diverse business areas, production teams, planning teams, contractors, and technical functions.
Previous experience and knowledge working to ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
