About the Role

Within the Cell Press Marketing team, you will define and execute brand storytelling strategies to enhance the Cell Press brand, mission, and impact among researchers and authors. This role requires both strategic planning and hands-on content creation, involving collaboration with internal teams and external partners to ensure compelling narratives reach target audiences and their impact is measured.

Responsibilities

  • Shape strategic brand storytelling by developing and evolving the storytelling approach, connecting communications to brand strategy, mission, vision, values, and business priorities.
  • Identify proactive storytelling opportunities that showcase unique aspects of Cell Press.
  • Translate business and brand priorities into clear communications strategies, campaign concepts, narratives, and content plans.
  • Develop creative approaches for major Cell Press moments, milestones, and editorial initiatives.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of audiences and the scientific/publishing landscape to ensure relevant and differentiated storytelling.
  • Help maintain a consistent Cell Press brand voice and narrative across communications.
  • Create and commission compelling content, including writing and editing for external audiences, translating complex ideas into clear stories.
  • Exercise strong editorial judgment regarding story selection, format, and audience framing.
  • Develop clear creative briefs and commission content from freelancers, agencies, and other partners.
  • Manage external contributors from briefing through delivery, providing editorial direction and ensuring work meets requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal subject-matter experts to uncover stories and translate their expertise into accessible content.
  • Build integrated channel strategies by developing campaign-level strategies focused on audience needs and objectives.
  • Partner with channel owners across social media, email, web, and other channels for coordinated execution.
  • Ensure content is adapted for different channels and audience segments.
  • Unite channel partners around clear objectives, audiences, messages, roles, timelines, and success measures.
  • Apply audience and performance insights to improve story distribution and amplification.
  • Measure and demonstrate impact by defining KPIs and measurement plans for campaigns, connecting metrics to brand and business objectives.
  • Track and report on content and campaign performance using analytics platforms.
  • Analyze performance across channels and audiences to understand successes and failures, pivoting as needed.
  • Translate data into actionable insights and recommendations for future campaigns and strategy.
  • Develop clear reports and presentations demonstrating the impact and business value of strategic communications.
  • Lead strategic storytelling campaigns from ideation through measurement and retrospective.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, establishing clear plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Build strong working relationships and collaborate effectively with marketing colleagues, editors, journal teams, and stakeholders.
  • Develop high-quality strategic and creative presentations.
  • Present campaign strategies, concepts, recommendations, and results to senior leaders.
  • Manage freelancers and external partners effectively, ensuring quality and delivery.

Requirements

  • 3–6 years of relevant experience in brand communications, strategic communications, content marketing, brand marketing, journalism, or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing strategic storytelling or integrated communications campaigns for external audiences.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to make complex subjects clear, engaging, and relevant.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and editorial judgment, including the ability to identify stories that advance brand and business objectives.
  • Project management skills and experience leading multi-stakeholder campaigns from strategy through execution and measurement.
  • Experience developing multi-channel strategies and collaborating with channel owners or specialists across web, social media, and email.
  • Understanding of audience segmentation and the ability to tailor content, messaging, and distribution strategies.
  • Data-informed approach to communications, with experience identifying KPIs, interpreting campaign performance, and translating results into actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent presentation and stakeholder-management skills, including experience developing persuasive decks and presenting ideas to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience briefing, commissioning, and managing freelancers, agencies, or other external creative partners.
  • Familiarity with HubSpot and Cision, or comparable communications, marketing automation, and measurement platforms.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery and work effectively across multiple concurrent priorities.

  • U.S. National Base Pay Range: $71,600 - $119,400
  • New York Base Pay Range: $78,700 - $131,400
  • New York City Base Pay Range: $85,900 - $143,300
  • Rochester, NY Base Pay Range: $71,600 - $119,400
  • Eligible for annual incentive bonus
